It all depends. I'm expecting maxwell to wipe the floor with everything out there now. by some 30%+. if that's the case, and they're the first ones to release their 20nm cards, they can price it at whatever they want. And they will most likely be the first ones to release the 20nm cards. AMD will follow and most likely price their cards a lot more competitively which will force nvidia's hand. but I think Maxwell will be expensive. eek 🙁
If Maxwell really is releasing Q1 2014 it won't be on 20nm. In which case 30%+ performance over current gen goes out the window. At most it will hit 20%. New arch + die change maybe 35% but again that pushes till at least Q2 if not Q3. I don't think Nvidia is going to wait that long. Its pretty clear judging by their mobile efforts that Nvidia is focusing heavily on power reduction. I think Maxwell is going to have a huge focus there, even more so than Kepler did. I think this will disappoint most people here. They may bring some new technologies to the table in order to pacify gamers -- i'm actually surprised they didn't hold back g-sync till Maxwell's launch.

isn't maxwell confirmed to be a 20nm chip?
Their roadmap showed that they were aiming for 20nm launch of Maxwell Q1 2014, but that was at the end of last year -- TSMC has pushed mass production of 20nm back to June since then. Nvidia is expected to launch Maxwell in Feb/March. So either there is going to be a heavy shortage for while or the initial chips won't be 20nm. Considering how good the 290X is my bet is on the latter.

Hilbert, any words on the difference between PCI-E 2.0 and 3.0? Is there a difference in performance? Also in CrossfireX?

Good question! Been wondering that as well. Not that it would stop me from buying, am not upgrading cpu/mobo till cpu's hit 5Ghz and over (i mean easily i know some do already). Ahh temptation temptation, have had my shopping cart filled only to think hold your horses....(can just see the boxes 🙂 ) At least to see how things turn out..

This is practically perfect. A little hot maybe, but third party coolers/watercooling would help that a great deal 😀

i have to admit it its a very nice card and very good price, but its to loud and to hot i am living in a warm environment so no good for me, and the other hand 3 or 6 fps more than GTX 780 in some games and some 2fps in anothers mmm... the real thing is when asus or gygabite realese they cards. i am stick to my GTX 780 and hope this bring gown the prices for nvidia cards and let see how perform the GTX 780 ti, i bet its wana be more faster than R9 290X. like always its my own opinion.

*Buys $550 GPU *Doesn't have an air conditioner Mmmm... In any case, I don't see an issue with the heat as long as you don't plan on OC'ing much.

Nvidia will always be able to hike their prices up because AMD are regularly late to the party. If they caught up and levelled the playing field, they'd keep Nvidia's prices on a leash.

^ Me too, Im thinking max 400€.

The Prolimatech MK-26 Multi VGA Cooler fits these according to cockers, so they are doing 290x's with them pre-fitted, just got to add the fans. 🙂 ^ Will end up giving the 770 a run if the 290's priced that low 😀

Yeah looks very good that 🙂

Drool worthy performance and pricing both. 🙂 I don't mind the stock dba at all, but I would prefer to keep my GPU under 85C on avg. The question is, raise the fan speed and get a truly "noisy" GPU or shell out some extra cash for a custom cooler? Considering how much cheaper it is then the competition (currently) I think the custom cooler is a no brainer for anyone that can wait an extra month or two. 🤓

So custom it is, yeah it changes everything.. Makes you wonder wth were AMD thinking with that stock cooler.

i almost pulled the trigger on that 290x. Then i gave myself a slap and convinced myself that it's best to wait
Rofl 😀

I guess they cut corners as best the could to offer such competitive pricing.
It's probably still the most potent crappy reference cooler ATi/AMD have ever used for a single GPU.

its a never ending circle. card A is fast (stock) card B is just as fast or faster when overclocked rinse and repeat 😀

An EVGA 290X Classy would be awesome 🤓
