Am gonna wait to see what happens re 780 + 780ti prices. Also check out the waterblocks 🙂

Great card, no doubt with excellent price. It could be almost perfect, with a good aftermarket cooler. I will wait to December to see if with Mantle and a good aftermarket cooler solution it will wort it to trade for my 690GTX... BF4 fan here 🙂 Ah... and i want to see to what the 780ti is capable...

How much difference would even the best air cooling make?
My estimate would be A LOT. UBER mode has to throttle back by 15-17% once the reference 290X hits 94*C, so just keeping it at a steady 93*C at 1GHz should allow for a very significant performance increase. And all the custom coolers we know from the AIB partners should do a lot better than that.

Great card with a great price! AMD has a winner with this one! Too bad about the temps and noise but nothing that an aftermarket cooler can´t fix... Great review as always Hilbert!!! I hope Nvidia doesn´t forget to lower the prices ot the 780 and Titan after this...

hows 1000 to 600 core 17% reduction?

http://tpucdn.com/reviews/AMD/R9_290X/images/analysis_uber.gif It SPIKED down to 600MHz, but seems to stabilize towards slightly over 800MHz with the fan doing over 3000RPM. It may just as well go below 800MHz but the graph doesn't show us that. That would be 20% lower than advertised for the UBER mode.

R9-290X Vs. GTX780/780Ti, are two identical in performance and price, only from power consumption and temp/noise AMD looses a bit, that's why its cheaper, honestly I think the decision for opting for one or another it as to be in personal taste and features like Eyefinity, Mantle, Cuda, G-Sync etc..

Are the GFX cards tested in the BF3 test with 100% usage? If not how can the test give a correct result? Im running my 2500K@4600mhz with 670 GTX SLI and nor my CPU or GPU is under 100% usage

So overclocked 290 beats stock 290x... Think I will wait.

Hope we'll see non-reference models out soon, I really did not like the noise/temperature parts even if it's "normal". Price/performance though is phenomenal compared to 780/Titan.

Should go read Gibbos thread over on cockers, 290 non x is looking very good, has it obliterating the Titan when oc'd. 😀

Thank you very for a great review. AMD indeed puts pressure on Nvidia. Hopefully Nvidia consider lowering prices. Now I am looking forward for PPD in F@H and see whether it worth going for 280x SLI or single 290x.
Did you mean CrossFire?

Nice gpu, but the heat is meh.. I'll wait for Asus Direct CUii type, I saw it rocks on 780gtx, I have no doubt it will on R9-290x too.

AMD delivered exactly what I was hoping for. For some reason, I just can't get excited about this gen of cards...not sure exactly why.

Man you seen review where they overclocked the 290X increased voltage too that power consumption when overclocked :infinity:
AMD's Radeon R9 290X shows fantastic clock scaling with GPU voltage, better than any GPU I've previously reviewed. The clocks do not show any signs of diminishing returns, which leads me to believe that the GPU could clock even higher with more voltage and cooling. AMD's stock cooler is completely overwhelmed with the heat output of the card during voltage tweaking, though. Even at 100%, it could barely keep the card from overheating and was noisier than any cooler I've ever experienced. My neighbors actually complained, asking why I used power tools that late at night. Power draw also increases immensely, going from just above 400 W for the whole system to around 650 W! To conclude, I expect extreme overlclockers with access to liquid nitrogen to love this card. Everyone else will probably find voltage tuning beyond +0.05 V to be too hot and too noisy.

If you're building a "high-end" gaming system....what does power consumption really matter?
https://forums.guru3d.com/data/avatars/m/242/242471.jpg
Well at least they tried. Custom cooler is a must.

Not a bit. A lot, lol.
Indeed it's almost the same performance at almost half price. I hope this day will bring prices to a reasonable range again (yes, even for the high end segment, Titan was just ridiculously high priced)...

I agree. I think AMD priced their cards really well and I really hope nvidia stick to these prices from now on. But I have a feeling Maxwell will be expensive again, I hope not!
Ofc it will be overpriced, it's a fact. We can hope that AMD will keep this up so it wont be ridiculous.
