That true Ash, but remember, the 290x has only just been released/reviewed and with plenty of more driver updates to come, where the 780 has prbably been near maxed from driver revisions, i think the 290x will come out on top in the long run. And with water cooling being as simple as the method myself (currently still on my 580's) and others have used, that being slapping an antec 620 prefabbed water cooling kit on the gpu die with a few cable ties, your looking at a powerful and cool running gpu that is priced extremely well.
Drivers rarely improve the temperature of a card, mate :P I still have my SLI 580's on water as well, but I don't really want to watercool a new generation of cards, so I'll just stick to air on the GPU's and stick to water on the CPU at least. I am tempted by this card, I won't lie. Especially since I have my actual PC case in the other room, so I can crank up the fans and not care how loud it is. Oddly though, current listings of the 290x on one of the leading Swedish store chains has it priced at 943$ equivalent, even though it's bubdled with BF4, it still seems incredibly expensive. They have the 7990 priced at the same level. Strange.

Its ok putting them out at £450 but I cant see anywhere that has them in stock at that price. SCAN are asking £515. As mentioned id like to see a vanilla cooled stable OCed 780 up against a vanilla cooled stable OCed 290x.

What! Drivers can easily effect the temp of cards. Its called Optimization.
Id be amazed if a driver could shave a significant amount of heat off this bad boy. What were the ambient temps when the card was tested, if it was cool then these may throttle considerably in a warm room.

If I want to OC and don't want to have a jet plane engine in my computer I suppose I should wait for the after market coolers?

My wife's GTX460 runs just as hot today as it did 3-4 years ago. Same for my 580's. Same for my son's GTX260.

Same for my NINE YEAR OLD 6800GT...95-98*C, up to 104*C with 10-15% OC.

By running at 95C, we are both maximizing the performance and minimizing the acoustics of the product
All relative I suppose.

seeing as you can pre-order it for £429-£439 I wouldn't think the a lightning would cost £600 when it finally lands. On a lighter note, a little snippet from the Techpowerup review
So to get 780 thrashing performance without a headache you will need to pay for either WCing or a higher spec'd cooler. A £50 cut in 780 prices could stifle the 290x. similar price and performance but without the noise, the ball is in NVs court.

yes is the short answer.
Time to wait and see...but I suppose its not worth the downgrade for me anyways. Though I thought about getting one now and then another one in a few months when I saved up more money. 290X CF outperforms my 680SLI and will enable me to run higher resolutions in the future.

The ref cooler can keep up with the 800MHz QUIET clock at max 3300RPM, that's about it. The 1 GHz uber clock is effectively slightly over 800MHz once it hits 94*C.

no, the reference 290x is £429-439+. These are pre-order only, Scan upped their price because they have them in stock. But once the market settles, they will be selling for £430 ish, so I don't think a lightning will cost £600. I reckon by the time these custom cards are out in december, they will cost under £500.
Supply and demand, they will sell them for as high a price as they can.

Well I know some peoples 780's hit a temp barrier in the UK during the summer, would be interesting to see 290x performance under those conditions. Im sure owners will run at full speed initially but im sure once the novelty has worn off they will drop those clocks to subdue the noise.

Ouch. CF is pretty much out of the question with these.

mmmm decisions. a 780 can be had for around £500 whereas a 290x plus a waterblock would set me back around £550 (perhaps bit less)... Nice review Hildebrand!

I would not cf these reference ones, no way, even one sounds awful, imagine 2 of them together.
Yep. Apparently the stock cooler does suck balls. Asus direct cu cooler would probably fix that but even still it would dump a lot of heat inside the case. Probably manageable with one card but CF is another matter... I'd definitely consider getting another 7950 if I were you.

Awesome card 😯 Need to get one come xmas. So smaller die then titan but uses bit more power and has heat issues ok give me aftermarket kuhlers. But at half the price oh damn and the same performance level in UHD atleast all the time. While beating 780 to bulb in xfire. Yeah AMD made a winner here for sure. And the price is the most amazing thing for me tho 😀 I don't see any real advances in performance tho until we get to 20nm or so. Since they would only be increasing the die size like hell from here on out else it would be minimal changes in perf.

Awesome cards, and what a price, i never expected them to be that low, £450+, nice one AMD 😎

Nice review indeed. 500Eur sounds about right, cheaper then both 780 and titan. Looking forward to 290 (non-x) it should be even more tempting.
