Going by the article it implies that it's the cable specifications that are changing and no real information on the actual device ports, although obviously a lot of the features are unreleased so new devices are inevitable to make use of them, I'm more interested in the expanded colour range at 4K with HDR enabled that current cables can't deliver. "Supporting the 48Gbps bandwidth is the new Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable. The cable ensures high-bandwidth dependent features are delivered" So I guess what I'm asking is will buying the newer 48Gbps cable enable the full colour space at 4K on existing TV's while using HDR or are the current HDMI 2.0 ports just not capable?
I see what you're getting at now. The article also says it is backwards compatible. Unless they did the same thing that USB 3.0 did (where they have additional pins involved, and I don't see how they could get away with that for a slew of reasons) I figure the only differences between the cables are the quality of the metals and the amount of shielding involved. You can think of it like Ethernet cables, where you could use a cat3 for Gigabit Ethernet, but since the cable wasn't built up to that spec, you could compromise data integrity. It is technically compatible and you could have a perfectly good experience, but using one is just frowned upon. So, if you have good quality HDMI cables, I'm sure you can keep using them no problem. Keep in mind HDMI is designed for the convenience of the general public, and having a "HDMI 2.0" cable that is incompatible with a 2.1 would be pretty confusing. They'd have been better off just renaming it to "UHDMI".

Haha well aside from getting a decent amount of cash for an outdated used GPU, I admit talking about this kind of stuff can sometimes trigger a big desire to just cave in. You'd be surprised how often I've considered getting a 1080Ti or a 4K display, but I'm like "nope - gotta wait". But then... https://cdn.business2community.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/TreatYoSelf.jpg Did you mean to ask the inverse of that question? Existing cables should remain compatible; it's the devices that need to be compatible.
It was still not despatched today so i cancelled it. lol.
