Its already dead, thankfully, no doubt will appear in some form or other in the future based on valves statement

From what I understand, only 25% of the profit goes to the modder. The rest goes to Valve and the game developer.. Not sure if I like that.. I prefer the modder getting at least 40%. Some mods have helped fix games.. Essentially the dev is profiting from modders fixing their game....
Actually it should be vice versa: Steam should, if anyhow, receive the smallest part, and the modder the bigger share, since he's actually doing the work. Devided over all the mods that you could pay for in Steam's model, the modders invest more time per mod than steam in creating the infrastructure and running the servers.

I agree, this won't be the last we're seeing of this wretched idea.

Valve got 30%, Bethesda got 45% and the modders mearly 25%. This was the first problem with the paid mods. Sure.. I'm all up for paid mods and sure the Bethesda should get a small cut for their IP, but i'm not seeing how a 45% is fair. Also forcing a paid mod model on a 4 year old game with a well established modding community where mods are shared freely probably was not the best idea. Also another thing they should have done to ensure that quality of content published, is to have a publishing fee. This would have encourage modders to create quality contant and helped to keep the scammers away.

From all the details that Gabe has stated, its all data related, so if he sees petitions of what people would like from valve (internet surveys) and have half life 3 in their as a top earner, maybe he might go for it. Big data and all that rather than some people on forums 🙂

Apparently they were getting bombarded with emails, to the tune that the cost of those were outweighing the profits from the mods.

This was an uncharacteristically rapid correction by Valve--good for them that they've stilled this abomination before it could be born...;)

Now go back to work on HL³.

I dislike the idea of paid mods. Modding is, or at least used to be, about doing something fun with a game in your spare time and tossing it to the community if you felt like it. When you monetize it all you do is attract people that want to make a quick buck off of it.

There is always The Nexus where you can upload your mods and not get paid a cent. Then again.. its the people who are crying about having to pay for a mod, not the uploader. Don't want to buy a mod, go to The Nexus or some other site.
The only hope we as players have is that those mod authors don't pull their mods from the Nexus / wherever they might be hosted, and put them into the workshop. Because the Nexus too only has as many mods as the authors let them. The way I see it, if they bring back any payment model, the only people really able to provide the players with free mods are the modders.

Here was the thought of the matter, authors would take their mod off of Nexus if they can potentially get paid for it on Steam. Another issue is authors would charge for useless mods, the Golden potato was 49 cents and did nothing. Micro Transactions mod was $9.99! Authors would just put out useless and stupid content out there and charge for it all, they would pretty much being doing quantity versus quality.

Well, it's up to players to chose if they need the useless mods, everybody has to make their own decisions. But yeah, like your first link vbetts, what happens if the modders themselves pull their stuff and put them up for sale over steam, exclusively.

Yes Valve, you don't know what you're doing, but, you seem to learn quickly. Except where Half life is concerned. As for mods...I'm very interested in OFFICIAL character mods. I dream of a day when I can buy for example "Spiderman" and this character works across a wide selection of games. Could even be that this character mod/skin works in Skyrim, GTA V, Far Cry, Doom, Unreal Tournament, Garrys mod etc. You can imagine the scope and possibilities. Ofcourse, technically difficult especially with all the different game-engines, but, that's what I'm interested in. Charge us £1 to £2 per character, £3-5 perhaps for extra special ones. The main point though is that the character must be available in a selection of games (i.e. works in more than 1 game with just one-time purchase). Perhaps one day...

I completely agree. Whenever I made mods, it was for fun. Like right now I'm waiting for root on my Note 4 and there is a bounty. So now people are not working openly and together to get root cause they want to be greedy and its making the process take longer.

They're only interested in letting others do the work and then cashing in 😀

I hope this opens some eyes among Valve fanboys. They started even banning people who criticized this idiocy. Valve is after new revenue sources because their growth potential has quite much saturated. There just isn't more players, so they need to take more money from existing ones. And I believe they will continue in this path. All this Steam hardware and consolising PC gaming is just another part of this sceme. And I wouldn't be surprised to see some other micro-payment systems too in the future.

This. The Google of gaming, lol.

Nothing about it was "forced"

(note, not number of accounts, i believe they stated what they mean by active users once, but i don't recall exactly what was said, but that it made sense) 2009 - 25 million active users 2010 - 30 million active users September 2011 - 35 million active users November 2012 - 50 million active users January 2014 - 75 million active users September 2014 - 100 million active users February 2015 - 125 million active users And if you want concurrent users (which don't really tell much since the world revolves/not everyone is logged on all day/etc.) January 2012 - 5 million concurrent users November 2012 - 6 million concurrent users December 2014 - 7 million concurrent users June 2014 - 8 million concurrent users January 2015 - 8.5 million concurrent users April 2015 - 9.1 million concurrent users etc. etc. So i'm not sure where you're getting your information

What about the mod that popped up asking you to pay every 1/25 spell casts?
