Great read indeed. I need to buy a CPU Cooler for mine to test it out, thinking of getting the Noctua NH-D15 (Just need to check if it fits in my case and on my motherboard). BTW 4.4Ghz @ 1.138v Stable with Stock Cooler, I might have a great chip. 4.5Ghz @ 1.15v... However, these clocks were for benchmarking, gaming, movies and the such (stability)... I couldn't really stress test without a cooler, scared CPU temperatures might hit too high. I'm sticking to 4.2Ghz @ 1.044v stable both for benchmarking/gaming and until I get a cooler, @ 4.2Ghz and 1.044 vcore, it's not hitting any crazy high temperatures. Also ran through 3DMark @ 4.6Ghz @ 1.155v (but temperatures were way too high with stock cooler, so switched back to 4.2Ghz).

HH ... you are 2 mhz short for 5Ghz 😀 ... nice review , never owned an Intel ( never had the money for it ) .... but next build hopefully by the time I am 35 will be an Intel based pc !

I was wondering how you made out with the chip. Happy for you now 5.0 on just water 🤓 Honestly I think its a real novel idea, dont get me wrong I like to go down to the local microcenter and get a chip or two to bin every week(with a friend or strangers help because 1 per costumer deals)and can normally sell them rather fast if not what I want.,but seems pretty hassle free Good luck with further testing Hilbert was a great read once again oh and like I have said before I love the looks of that motherboard but still cant find one.

Great cpu review. I wonder how it would perform in games that multithread such as Metro and BF4 or it won't matter since GPU may affect it? I wish that site existed when I had to upgrade. Would be an awesome Arma game cpu due to single threaded performance requirements.

Is that boards stock an issue in the states? Its quite available in the UK and Norway. In fact doesnt look like many are being sold here (Norge 😉 )

5.0 GHz - stock (non-OC)!??? Wow!? If yes then I'm very interested. 🙂
I think you have misunderstood the process here 😉

They're quite reasonably priced even without a discount. A must-have for enthusiasts. That said, I myself think I'm in the market for a Core i5 without a K. Diminishing returns, you see. Lately, I have been running my CPU at stock speed (down from an OC of 3.6 GHz) and I haven't noticed any meaningful change, even though it's 5 years old. What I'm saying is, I have a crisis of faith in overclocking :P

A lottery or not, it is pretty awesome to achieve 5 GHz on i7 Haswell 🙂

Awesome might have to jump on this!! I got a dud of a i7-4770K can't get it any higher than 4.2Ghz. Might be worth an upgrade if I can get a 4.6Ghz to 4.8Ghz CPU that runs under 1.3v.

you sir, need to try some mmo, will end your overclocking crisis immediately
Thanks for trying to help 🙂. I think it's more about becoming middle-aged. Besides, I don't play multiplayer games because a) my reflexes suck and b) I get far too excited (heart rate and blood pressure). See what I mean 🙂? Middle-farty-aged, that's what I've become.

No. Is this thread different to original i7-4790K??
The processor doesn't come stock at 5Ghz. The company tests a bunch of processors to make sure they can hit 5Ghz and then sells them for more money. You have to get them to 5Ghz yourself.

Great review as usual and very interesting read. Very good idea to personally bin CPUs and sell the overclock for extra cash. We would all of course love an i7 quad flagship @ 5ghz for our gaming or working computers. I very much doubt though that you would see any difference between say 4.8 and 5.0 while gaming. Although i absolutely love raw power i also love paying my electric bill (not). So even if i got a CPU like this then i still wouldn't put it under that amount of torture for 24/7 use. This does mean though usually that this chip will run smooth as a peach @ stock with amazingly low temps and power draw. (not always but mostly)

Very nice to know about that site. A 5960X at guaranteed 4,5 GHz ist just the medicine I need.

the increase in wattage in power load from defualt to 5ghz is huge 124 watt vs 234 watt @ 5ghz Still want one these chips, But i need mobo that is DDR4 and not a extreme edition mobo to go with it. that or what ever cpu they release to be successor to the i7 4790k ( a cpu with atlest 4ghz base clock)

Maby it will catch on and smaller companies like Intel will start selling them like this ><

I have a 2600K at 4.6. What king of comparative increase would i have going to a 4790K?
Not much but benchmarkwise 4.6GHz is equivalent to maybe a 4790K @4.2GHz. So think a Haswell chip being 400-500MHz under Sandy clocks. So a 4.5GHz will be sorta like having a Sandy at 4.9-5.0GHz. Voltage, heat output Haswell technically produces less unless you have one with bad contact.. like mine where it was really horrible and at stress (regardless if it was avx or non) gave me +20C, after delid it was much better. Runs cool, idles well like 800MHz (vs. 1600MHz) and low voltage, you jump platforms so P67/Z68/Z77 -> Z87/Z97, you get better memory controller, native pcie 3.0/native usb 3.0 (or more of), onboard sound improved (if thats to your liking), SSD/M2 support and so forth. So while its not a "needed" upgrade its definitely a good one but with timing most people may want to wait till whatever comes during the summer time, but if you find a good deal, its not a bad one to pass up either as these chips will last you a few more years just like the 2500K/2600K chips lasted you this long.

I'm curious with anyone who purchases these cpu @ 5 GHZ... how high can you OC stable if you disable 1 or 2 cores? The reason I ask is that most games are not well multithreaded so would a 5.5 or 6 GHZ dual core run BETTER than 5 GHZ quad core? Its easy to disable in the bios and test.

a 2600k is more than enough for gaming and pretty much everything else...the next significant leap will be skylake , probably 1 - 1\2 year from now . btw: i was able to reach 5.0 with my 4790k but it isn't stable enough for 3dmark...0 bsod though
My 4690k can boot at 5Ghz, but crashes in Prime95 in about 4 seconds lol I didn't bother going above 1.3v however, I've got adequate cooling tho so might try 1.35v at some point.
