Maybe, just MAYBE their low sales have something to do with their technology being half a decade behind.

The 7000 series peaked in the 2nd Q, then nvidia released all it's mid-range & 660 ti's in 3rd Q, AMD know how to make GPUs no doubt about it.
I'm talking about CPUs obviously. They could make the greatest GPUs in the multiverse and it won't matter since they're aiming to rival Adobe when it comes to program instability.

They know how to make CPUs too. It's not like they are #79. You don't lose what... almost 2/3 of the company in 6 months for being 2nd best IN THE WORLD

Pc market is in a slump anyway, not unexpected. I hope they branch out more or infuse young blood in to their management at the very least. Nvidia did well to expand into the SoC/mobile category.

I bet the next gen of consoles will see both Nvidia and AMD improve in both CPU and GPU sales, it's just a matter of AMD really out-doing Nvidia in both price and performance. As for the everyday user, I'm really not sure. I recently put together an HTPC for my dad w/ one of AMD's CPUs that have the GPU built into them. Nifty little thing.

It's sort of a mixed bag. There are those that simply don't have the money to spend.... Those that are waiting for Oct 26 and the Win8 launch.... And then there are those that have abandoned AMD for Intel/nVidia or even a tablet. AMD's CPU division is struggling.... They aren't the kings of price/performance anymore and with PC users starting to migrate from desktops/laptops to tablets... Either AMD needs to follow the trend or expect to die off.
Well I was half wrong then. :P
Or half right....lol

...nvidia and intel are wiping the floor with AMD in the performance department...
This is not exactly true now is it. The 7 series is getting cheaper all the time and the performance is fantastic. In fact I have still been monitoring the drivers in that section and people seem to be having far less problems with AMD drivers now than I am using Nvidia. Hate it when people tell lies just to justify the way they feel/think/purchase. Shameful.

Energy consumption, heat, and noise are not fantastic though....

nVidia has sold far more cards than AMD, so its a given that there will be a higher number of people with noob problems.

Reminds me of all the BS people would say in order to justify buying bulldozer and HD7xxx. For the first time ever, the AMD fanboys couldn't use their favorite fall-back benchmark... Performance/Watt.

You missed the point. I was replying to what you WROTE. The PERFORMANCE is great when it comes to their graphics cards. The lies part was NOT directed at you. Just people in general when they try to defend a company or purchase for no reason that makes sense.

If AMD pull out of the CPU market, at least the price of Intel chipsets will come down, as well as all related peripherals. Right now you got the entire manufacturing industry divided with two standards; this leads to unhealthy competition guys. With one standard, the demand would rise and the cost of manufacturing this one standard will drop. Economics 101.

How exactly is having multiple standards "unhealthy"? More "standards" means more choice. Without AMD, Intel would have no reason to lower their prices as VIA is unable to compete with Intel directly, in any market. VIA simply doesn't have the resources.

Read this Whole 2 pages, but well worth it

Intel does all its manufacturing in house so it wouldn't affect CPU prices nor chipset prices from a manufacturing point of view. The related peripherals all use the exact same standards, as do the CPUs (x86 instructions).
For ARM to compete in the desktop market, compatible peripherals will have to be available. Otherwise, they'll be relegated to second-class laptops.

Those 2 pages hardly explains why Intel would be inclined to lower their prices without AMD. If Intel is left as the only desktop processor option, ARM moving towards the laptop space, VIA flopping around in the embedded space (POS, ATMs, etc).... The only option in the desktop market would be Intel. For those of us that wish to maintain desktop computers, Intel would be able to charge a premium with the knowledge that the market is slowly moving away from desktops to laptops, "ultrabooks", tablets and smartphones. With school systems (as Chillin pointed out) moving towards laptops and tablets, the desktop market will begin to erode at a faster pace.

Oh come on... did you really read THAT? I'll post in another thread. No point keeping both alive.

AMD's board seems to make 1 bad decision after another here lately....

I still say that when AMD sold off their Imageon line to Qualcomm (which later became Adreno), it was a giant facepalm and still is to this day. If they have kept their Imageon line, who knows, AMD might be laughing their way to the bank. deltatux
Adreno, as in the crappy GPUs in every smartphone out there these days? Lol... AMD lost out big.

Unhealthy, as in; AMD laying off staff after producing products that are tryin to compete, but aren't. Lower price products, because the manufacturing cost drops off a cliff and hits the sea at supersonic speeds and breaks its neck, spine and the atomic structure of its legs. As stated, this is basic economics - and to suggest that intel would not lower prices is absurd, as not only does the production cost drop, so does the marketing - all those tv adverts and Internet banners ain't cheap. And they are they same the world over, meaning there are multilingual equivalents. I mean, I could go on forever listing where the savings would be made, but yeah, we'd benefit hugely, 'mate.

What are you talking about? Chip cost is determined by a number of factors: most notably die area and process node. AMD manufactures its chips with a larger die area and older process node at TSMC or Globalfoundries. This means AMD's chips already cost more due to the older process and the massive die areas they currently have. Intel manufactures its chips in-house because they can and they are the best at it. Not only do Intel chips consume less die space (therefore you can fit more chips per wafer) but they're also ahead in the process node. So in conclusion if AMD had to disappear Intels production costs would be UNCHANGED. This means you're wrong.
Not even close. do a web search for "Price equilibrium of demand in manufacturing". Or simplistically; if AMD do not exist, the cost of Intel chip to consumers would drop. It's not about who's right or wrong; it's about economics, whilst although is a pseudo-science invented by people who were not smart enough to be scientists; their formulae is pretty logical and an interesting study of the scarcity of materials across the 20th century to today.

Wonder if they'll get their 8 series out before they die.
