Undying
Its a peak power. If we look at that way 12900k pulls 300w.

Well this statement explains better the boost between 5.2 and 5.5ghz across multiple cores for a longer time period π i was not able to understand how this was done with 170w max power but maybe the reason for that is a leak of my knowhow and expirience π
BLEH!
I don't like the direction they're heading with the power usage, but it's *STILL* lower power than intel (16 full cores vs. 8 full and 8 mini ones), and probably a good chunk faster. Price will tell, I guess! (and how long the silicon can last under those conditions)

So, okn higher tier CPU, the PBO can set the clocks and proportional the power consumption up to that amount?
Achieving this is no small feature

Honestly, I'm just really curious to see how @Hilbert Hagedoorn tests them, and with what methodology and hardware. It's tricky to do anyway, since it seems like a feature highly dependant on cooling, which is NEVER the same for any two rigs.
Results may vary.

Will there be 65w chips or are all of them expected to be heaters for the winter?

Again, disappointed on the direction AMD is going plus hiding the real info from the announcements to look good.
We need more efficient hardware, not this +200W monsters...
I'll stick to under 100W CPUs thank you.

Don't think I've ever seen the term PPW used, but I like it. What I don't like is the number. If the PPT was 170 I'd be a lot more excited.
In any case, I don't plan to get one of these super high-end CPUs, so, such numbers likely won't affect me. After finding out my old X370 board now supports the 5000 series, I'm heavily considering just getting a 5800X3D. Honestly, maybe even a 5700X. It really just comes down to how much better 7000 will be.

Follow Intel is not good idea..

Honestly never had much issue with power decade ago... that being said most parts tended to use less power anyway... think 2700k and 7970 were about 65w and 250w
but with how expensive power is becoming in the world, it really makes you want lower watt parts... reason they dont wan't to do it is because it goes back to slow gains 5% year on year... can't have bigger gains without throwing power at it π
kinda looking forward to my steam deck honestly.... 20w machine cost almost nothing to run π

Having a high peak max socket power doesn't mean much other than you may have some extra overclocking headroom. People are reading too much into this at least for now. They are not saying they have a chip that will pull 230w.
cucaulay malkin
if that bothers you buy a cpu that doesn't consume 230w
there will be those too,you know
