I'll be getting a 7850 in a few days, but I've had very little to no issues with any driver (performance and graphics-wise) on my 5570. Only major pain I've had lately was trying to install unofficial beta drivers on Windows 8; but that's more because of Microsoft...
goodluck with your 7850, i've had nothing but trouble with my newly bought 7850, the clocks are constantly switching between 2d and 3d clocks during gaming, and it caused major stuttering, haven't found a fix for this yet. someone suggested i use the old 12.4 or 12.6 drivers, but maybe i'll try it later, kinda a bit lazy to uninstall then reinstall the driver. btw does anyone know if the voltage issue for MSI power edition are only for the 660Ti and 670 only ? cos i heard MSI Power edition cheated by using 9v, from the test results, and nvidia are furious with MSI, and telling MSI to fix it. Edit : and forgot to mention, AMD locked the Max OC to only 1050 MHz for all 7850.

Nvidia is butthurt because AMD/ATI pulled ahead of the GTX 680 with Ghz edition and further OCing of even that BIOS. They are such crybabies lately. They even take down their forums and blame it on hackers when it's clearly for another reason. Too many complaints going there way it seems. And now they cry yet again to MSI over something stupid. Nope just not allowed to outdo Nvidia are we?

They mean motherboard drivers but that's still a very generic response, not sure how to best describe it.
data/avatar/default/avatar36.webp
It is pretty specific; its compatability with on-board vga... If you dont have an IGP, or an IB/SB with VGA onboard, you have a different issue..

My own motherboard had a compatibility issue with the 7000 series and sleep mode which was resolved pretty quickly, updating the bios is usually advised but it's also a very standard troubleshooting response like seen here so it's not like there is a standard issue with the 7000 series where it needs a motherboard update to be fully working and compatible but updates can improve general functionality and thus stability of components like the CPU or in this case the GPU. 🙂 (Supporting newer models of hardware - usually CPU - more efficiently for example or improving OS compatibility, most of the recent updates for this motherboard have been for general stability improvements and Windows 8 compatibility to give a example but in doing so it has also given new functionality and likely resolved a number of bugs, apparently firmware for SATA and some other stuff is still unresolved though there are user made modifications available.) EDIT: More importantly when I got the motherboard it had some really old bios revision which wasn't even listed on their website, updating that was one of the first things I did.

So I wonder what of older motherboards that happen to require a BIOS update? I don't think Biostar is too bad with older motherboard support, but I just don't imagine them running to release a BIOS update for my older motherboard... But maybe I'm wrong 🙂 Edit: I do wish there was something more "specific" that could be said though to motherboard manufacturers though. If I did need to ask Biostar for an updated BIOS, what's the most I can say, other then "apparently an updated BIOS will help resolve issues with my Radeon HD 7850 GPU"?
They didn't release an updated BIOS for my board (and still havn't), so i had to get rid of my 7970 for a Nvidia card.

Hmm, my motherboard has an IGP (4250) but it's disabled in BIOS. No idea if that would make a difference or not, but in any case maybe I'm worrying about nothing...
No, disabling it changes nothing. The issue is that it exists, disabled or no.

for my BIOS, the compatibilty of PCIE and IGP has been patched a long time ago, and i've checked my mobo page, and any possible conflict with IGP is patched since 2008, along with the relase of Nvidia 7950 GX2, that is according to the info on my mobo page.

its a recent incompatibility, If you dont have a recent (in the last couple months) bios update, you could be subject to the issue...

Ok, so I thoroughly uninstalled the 12.8 set again following this guide: http://www.overclock.net/t/988215/how-to-properly-uninstall-ati-amd-software-drivers-for-graphics-cards I was a bit weary of using Driver Sweeper as it doesn't seem to be supported anymore and some users have warned that it may delete important system files. Then I installed the new 12.9 betas and the shadows are gone again when set to ultra in Skyrim. It's weird that it only happens outdoors. Inside, the shadows work fine. I've narrowed it down to one line in the SkyrimPrefs.ini: iShadowMapResolution=4096 If I set this value to 2048 (1/2) or even 8192 (x2), shadows work outdoors again. The problem is that 2048 looks kind of crappy and 8192 substantially lowers performance. I might just stick with the 2048 shadows and hope that 12.9 official drivers resolve the issue.
lol, interesting... 3072 is the best so far. As you said 2048 sucks and 8192 is the best, but performance goes away.

Screwed up all D3D games for me. Lost FPS in CoD and BF3 by about 50%. Sent me back to 4890 speeds... Waiting for officials...

like i said my mobo brand which is Gigabyte, doesn't add new bios, after 2008, i couldn't possibly make my own bios. besides is there even a mobo brand, that is still making new bios for their older mobo products ?

So any info on the explorer crash issue yet?

Well, then if you have this specific problem, you are sol. Either buy a new mobo (5 years is pretty old) or live with it. 5 years puts you in early 775 territory. Newer games are very CPU dependant, and most 775s just dont have enough juice for all the eye candy.

i know that my cpu is not powerful enough for newer games at high or ultra quality, but its still more than enough for medium quality gaming, besides i don't need you to tell me to buy new cpu, if i can afford it, i would be using 3770k right now, besides i just remembered, this clock switching issue just recently showed up, when i reinstall my win7x64, so i don't think my mobo got anything to do with the clock switching, that's why i've been wondering what is different between my old win7 installation and my current.

i was under the impression we were taling about the artifacting issue, not the clocks... the clocks are an ongoing issue, and AFAICT, its related to poor driver implementation of Powerplay/ULPS.

what settings?

Driver installed fine, but CCC is not opening. I already tried to uninstall CCC, reboot and install CCC again. But I luckily don't really need CCC 🙂
Run driver fusion then ccleaner before rebooting, after reboot run ccleaner again in normal mode, reboot and install drivers. Even running driver fusion in safemode doesnt remove all registry entries and without out a clean registry ccc wont install properly

Driver Fusion free version is garbage, use driver sweeper 3.2.

Why? Seems to work just as fine to me.
