I'm still rocking my Z-5500 after what must have been like 10 years 😱 now that I think about it. I know it might be not ideal for audiophiles, but it served me very well over the years. Bought some second hand spare speakers after one of the started crackling like 2 years ago, but other than that, it's damn durable. I wonder if I'll ever find a worthy replacement, this is likely not it.
Z5500's was the best 5.1 PC "AIO" setup for years. I still have my original system that used regular speaker cables - they eventually updated and used RCA. The controller and everything still works but the display is a bit damaged, I think my center channel stopped working too. I haven't used them in a bit (updated to KEF LS50s & surrounds) but they were definitely one of my best purchases.. got so much use out of them and the price was relatively cheap.

No HDMI? Seriously?

It was never "The best". They came in second to the 5.1 / 7.1 gigaworks set in nearly all reviews that weren't done by a deaf doof doof meathead.

Bluethooth audio came long way since AptX HD via 4.2+, as i have the Jabra Elite 65+ Active mainly for gym, i found myself using it everyday instead of mine wired E70(400$ in ear). Convince, but mainly because the DAC on all the smartphone(except LG V30,G7,V40) is pretty bad, and i hate to carry extra dongles.
It's for this reason i bought the LG v30, dongles have made it worse now phone wise 🙁 Bluetooth sure has got better, but it's still got a long way to go in my eyes

True, i would like LG to nail battery life better, with at least 4000mah, can't go back after the legendary Mate's 9 performance.

I always have a fond of 5.1 PC speakers. I'm more worried about the reliability of the amp modules in the subwoofer though. By the way, does it even do bass management (proper crossover) for all channels?

Disagree. A neighbor/friend of mine growing up owned the S750 and I owned the ProMedia 5.1 and Z5500 - Z5500 was the best. S750 had a better price/performance due to the extra channel but the 5500's were better sounding imo. The ProMedia had a better sub but the speakers were worse especially with higher frequencies. Also when I eventually replaced my sub I was able to just run the Z5500 speakers to a Marantz receiver because the earlier models used standard speaker wire and not RCA plugs like the S750. Plus the Z5500 had a cool knob control panel + optical input. Either way I run KEF LS50's powered by a Parasound A21 + Marantz SR6012, KEF Q650c and KEF Q100 for surrounds now + SVS SB2000 sub. I don't miss any of those systems anymore but I do have fond memories of them.

@tunejunky Not all BT is the same. Lots of Hi-res audio equipment out there supporting 900kbit and around 5-8 different codecs/processing from the different companies/brands behind it. Looked up the specs what 4.xx and 5.xx can do.. Besided that, its not even hires or thx certified, and the ppl buying for BT most likely ate not looking for high quality sound, the ones that do will most likely not even look at this. Similar to complaining that car yx can only do 60mph, when the speed limit is 55.. 🙄
all bluetooth devices do not qualify as high fidelity...period. and as i mentioned, every single one sounds better plugged in, including the Logitech. this is about truth, not snobbery.

aptX-HD supports 576kbps. It is transparent. Support for it is another matter though...
it is not "transparent" by any stretch of the imagination as errors abound and it is still lossy. but it is better. the only way to stream high fidelity at this point in time is to go bit perfect and pay for the software/hardware. again, not about "high-end" audio, just honesty among all of the marketing and false claims. every single purveyor is selling a worse product for more money than their non-bluetooth products. the sound difference is so massive you can hear it on $5 earbuds.

I feel like 192 is pretty low. I personally prefer V0/320 - I use FLAC to store but now in days I don't even bother storing. I could never hear any benefit of FLAC over 320, with my HD800 or my LS50s.

Why?
so many ways...let's start with lossy data in the first place, then go to inferior d/a and a/d converters (yes both) and a convoluted circuit path. finally the ultimate response is frequency limited by the bluetooth transmitter/receivers. FM radio was always limited in frequency response for the same reason...the frequency of the carrier wave.

without any disrespect or snark, you must've lost some hearing as you have good kit.

lol not even close. but then you're talking to a man that had to explain digital audio to the masses when it first appeared.

Yah, I'm 30, worked in the construction industry for a bit and used to blast death metal into my ears at extremely high volume levels - now I just listen to it at normal levels. I'm glad I can still hear at all honestly lol

Lossy and transparent are not the same thing. You can achieve transparency for many people at 96kbps using Opus, for example. And for the vast majority of people at 128. Listening tests have been performed over the years, these aren't statements I'm pulling out of my bum. At almost 500kbps, which is what AptX HD does, it is very difficult to imagine the audio not being transparent for pretty much everyone. As for uncorrected errors, yes, that would obviously introduce artifacts. But you make it sound like this is the norm, rather than the result of a bad setup?
