France fines Google 100 000EUR over Street View privacy concerns

Network 111 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Well now, AFP reports France's data privacy regulator has fined Google 100,000EUR for collecting private information while gathering photos for its Street View service. CNIL, the National Commission for Information Freedom, explains it fined Google because the company gained unfair economic benefits by inadvertently capturing unencrypted private data including passwords and e-mails by picking up WiFi data via its Street View cars.

Google's lawyer for privacy issues, Peter Fleischer, responds that the search giant is profoundly sorry for having mistakenly collected data from unencrypted wireless networks.

In addition to concerns about the photos taken, Google admitted in 2010 that its specially equipped cars taking the photographs were also picking up Wi-Fi data and had inadvertently captured unencrypted private data including passwords and e-mails.

CNIL, the National Commission for Information Freedom, said Google had pledged to erase all the private data, but that it had found "that Google has not refrained from using the data identifying Wi-Fi access points of individuals without their knowledge."

The regulator said it decided to impose the fine as this constituted "unfair collection" of information under French law and it had received economic benefits from the data.

SiteCom adds Cloud Computing Security as option to consumer routers

Network 111 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Dutch based network specialist SiteCom, selling predominantly in Europe, is launching a new range of routers. The routers will be tagged under the X-series 2.0 and get 6 models labeled X1 to X6 (being the most high-end.

Next to being an easy to use high-throughput series router with the X4, X5 and X6 being the gigabit versions and that X6 having 450Mbit wireless Ethernet. There is one new feature that is rather interesting on the three gigabit routers though.

SiteCom teamed up with a popular anti-virus firm to design a new layer of protection against Malware and viruses on all your network connected components. Added software in the router will function as active packet inspection on port 80, according to SiteCom without any noticeable increased lag. Port 80 data packets are inspected based on signatures and then verified on a cloud based solution located in a EU datafarm. Pretty much in-between the router and cloud farm a proxy is active, scanning all content and webpages and downloadable content for malware, viruses and phishing.

The interesting idea here is that all devices within the network (PC, NAS even your Android phone) get an extra security layer, once something fishy is detected the request will not pass onwards to your PC, instead your browser will get a warning screen.

Should by any chance a zero-day vulnerability still get through you will need Anti-virus software on your PC to remove it, but look at the solution as an extra firewall surrounding all devices connected in your network.

The SiteCom Cloud Security feature will be free for 6 months, after which a subscription is required at the cost of 14.95 EUR per year. The most expensive X6 router will cost roughly 120 EUR.
