ASUS Kinect Integrated laptops

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

ASUS is working on a series of notebooks with integrated Kinect functionality. The Daily reports ASUS has created Kinect-enabled notebooks:

We had a chance to check out a pair of prototypes incorporating Kinect sensors over the last few days. The devices, which at first glance appear to be Asus netbooks running Windows 8, feature an array of small sensors stretching over the top of the screen where the webcam would normally be. At the bottom of the display is a set of what appear to be LEDs.

A source at Microsoft has confirmed that the devices are indeed official prototypes of laptops featuring a Kinect sensor. In terms of functionality, there are hundreds of different ways that motion control could be leveraged in a portable. Gaming has the most obvious applications, but a Kinect-enabled laptop could also toggle between programs with the wave of a hand, or media controls could be tweaked with the wag of a finger. What

Android 4.0 runs on an AMD tablet

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

We just remembered there was one last curiosity we saw at AMD's suite at CES 2012: this AMD Fusion tablet, running Android 4.0. Before you get too excited, AMD was quick to point out that this MSI WindPad 110W didn't get Ice Cream Sandwich through any effort of its own. What you're looking at is actually the work of the Android-x86 project, which very recently released a test Android 4.0 ISO for AMD Brazos-based tablets like the one above.

The good news is that if you've got such a tablet lying around the house, you can download the ROM yourself. The bad news is that AMD tells us it doesn't officially support the community's efforts here, and you shouldn't necessarily expect AMD devices to run Android in the future. The intriguing news is that if you go to the Android-x86 project's website, you can plainly see that AMD is interested in where this road might go: the company donated some development boards to the project last April, and as of October the AMD "Persimmon" platform of embedded processors

Lenovo reveals dual-CPU ThinkPad Hybrid X1

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Lenovo is releasing the ThinkPad Hybrid X1, a 13.3" ultraportable laptop with two CPUs! Pricing starts at $1,599.

While the T430u isn't a radical departure, the ThinkPad Hybrid X1 is definitely something different. This 13.3" ultraportable is less than 0.6" thick, but it manages to squeeze two processors into its slender chassis. The first is your choice of Core i3, i5, and i7 CPUs, while the second is a dual-core Qualcomm chip based on the ARM architecture.

That Qualcomm chip gets 16GB of dedicated storage and a "custom Linux-based operating system" capable of handling media playback, picture browsing, and web surfing. Users are supposed to be able to switch between the Hybrid's processors with the touch of a button, and both run off the same battery. Incidentally, Lenovo claims that battery can be charged to 80% capacity in only 30 minutes.

Intel TDP of Ivy Bridge chips ultrabooks changed

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Intel probably irritated a lot of manufacturers by making some changes to the configurable TDP of its Ivy Bridge ultrabook processors because it wasn't able to provide large enough quantities of the CPUs. The changes are relatively small, but could potentially mean notebook makers will have to do a redesign of the cooling system.

Although good news in a way for Intel, it seems that the demand for its Ultrabook specific Ivy Bridge processors have been much higher than Intel initially anticipated and the company has as such had to make some changes to the configurable TDP of said processors. It appears that the company can't meet its earlier targets, at least not if it's going to be able to provide large enough quantities of the CPUs.

The changes aren't big and the nominal TDP remains at 17W and the same goes for the highest configurable TDP for these chips which stays at 25W. However, the lowest configurable TDP has been increased from 13W to 14W and the same goes for the low frequency mode. In addition the low power mode has increased from 11W to 12.5W.

Taiwanese firms pessimistic about Intel Medfield

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

DigiTimes reports Taiwanese smartphone and tablet PC makers are not going bonkers for Intel's 32nm "Medfield" Atom processor.
Because Intel did not establish close partnerships with first-tier smartphone vendors, while notebook vendors, which have smartphone product lines, are conservative about the new platform because of the negative experience with Intel's mobile Internet devices (MID), these factors are expected to pose strong difficulties for Intel to enter the smartphone market.

Intel has been working on improving its Atom SoC for smartphones and tablet PCs, and expects the new chip's power consumption will drop below 10W with related manufacturing process to also advance to 32nm Saltwell and then 22nm Silvermont, followed by 14nm Airmont within the next three years.

AMD Shows New A-Series Notebook APUs

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Yesterday AMD quietly introduced seven new accelerated A-Series notebook APU's, featuring quad and dual-core designs.

Four out of the seven CPUs introduced by AMD are from the A8 and A6 series which means that they include four processing cores, while the remaining three are A4 chips with dual computing cores.

The fastest of these quad-core models is the A8-3550MX which compared to its predecessor got 100MHz higher base and Turbo Core speeds, making it the first Llano mobile processors to reach the 2GHz frequency (2.7GHz in Turbo mode).

However, the specs of the graphics core were left unaltered and the chip sports the same Radeon HD 6620G integrated GPU which operated at 444MHz.

The remaining APUs launched by AMD also take a similar approach and just increase their base and Turbo frequencies with 100MHz over those of their predecessors, while the rest of the specs are left unaltered.

As Hardcore Hardware reports, the only exception to this rule is the entry-level A4-3305M, which works at the same frequencies as the previous A4-3300M, but now gets a new graphics core and a smaller amount of cache memory (1MB vs 2MB in the A4-3300M).

The new GPU is actually less powerful than the one in the A4-3300M as it comes with just 160 shader processors in comparison with the 240 shaders installed in the previous model, but received a higher operating frequency (593MHz vs 444MHz) to make up for this setback.

No info regarding pricing was made public by AMD, but the new Llano chips are expected to start making their way into laptops by the end of this year.

HP listing Notebooks with Radeon HD 7600

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

The first 28nm GPUs have been listed by HP and Asus, to feature in their upcoming notebooks. The listed GPUs are Radeon HD 7670 and Radeon HD 7690 - both based on the Thames XT chip. HP has also listed drivers for Radeon HD 7470 on their website, on the eve of the London media event for AMD's London series of Radeon HD 7000M GPUs reports vr-zone:

The Thames XT chip features 128-bit GDDR5 memory. PCGamesHardware suggests it utilizes the VLIW-4 architecture, while other rumours point to a GCN based London series. HP Envy 17-3030ew features Radeon HD 7690M with 1GB GDDR5, working with a Core i7 Sandy Bridge based quad-core CPU. The Asus X53TK-SX058V is a more budget oriented notebook, featuring Radeon HD 7670M in addition to a Llano APU.

AMD is expected to officially announce the London - branded Radeon HD 7000M - series today at a media event in London. All evidence point to the London series to be the first 28nm GPUs to launch, and also sets the scene for their desktop counterparts - Southern Islands - in early 2012.

Samsung halts netbook production

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Reports say that Samsung will discontinue its netbook products in 2012, instead the company will offer more powerful 11.6" and 12" ultraportable laptops as well as ultrabooks later in 2012.

Samsung, presumably earlier this week, sent an email to one of its partners notifying that already in the first quarter of next year it would discontinue its 10.1" netbook range and instead will offer more powerful 11.6" and 12" ultraportable laptops as well as ultrabooks later in 2012. While the move does not directly claim that Samsung shuts down its ultra low-cost personal computer (ULCPC) business, it is clear that the devices with 10.1" screens should be tablets.

"Following the introduction of our new strategy in 2012, we stop the production of the 10.1" range (netbooks) in Q1 2012 in favour of ultraportable products (11.6" and 12") and ultrabooks to be launched in 2012," the alleged Samsung e-mail, which was published by Blogeee web-site, reads.

AMD Radeon HD 7000M GPU Series Unveiled

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

AMD's Radeon HD 7000-series graphics cores should make their entrance in the market not too long away from now and recently the specifications of a wide series of the mobile version of these GPUs were leaked on the Web.

On the notebook front, the HD 7000-series will be comprised of five different graphics cores addressing the needs of a wide range of users ranging from the low-end to the enthusiast sectors.

Little is known about the most powerful of these GPUs, based on the Wimbledon, Heathrow and Chelsea designs, apart from a preliminary set of operating frequencies and the memory installed, but AMD's the mid-range and entry-level solutions are a lot better documented.

According to ComputerBase, the publication who got a hold of this info, the Thames and Seymour GPUs will be used by AMD in no less than 14 mobile graphics cores from the Radeon HD 7000 series.

Of these solutions, eight are based on the mainstream Thames core and these are expected to have TDPs ranging from 15 to 25 Watts thanks mainly to the transition from the 40nm process technology to the 28nm node. The Thames GPU will actually be available in four different versions, dubbed XT, Pro, LP and LE, which will be used to power the Radeon HD 7600M and HD 7500M notebook graphics cards.

Moving to the entry-level Seymour graphics cores, these will be marketed as the Radeon HD 7400-series and all include a 64-bit memory bus. Unlike its more powerful siblings, Seymour GPUs will be manufactured using the same 40nm process technology as that of the current AMD Radeon HD 6000 GPUs.

It appears that Nvidia will go for a similar approach (paring 40nm and 28nm parts) with their GeForce 600M GPUs, which seems to suggest that both graphics chip makers have troubles with TSMC's 28nm production node.
