Security hole uncovered in HTC Android phones

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Android Police has done some digging into a suite of logging tools, dubbed HtcLoggers, that were loaded onto a range of HTC phones in a recent update. While the exact purpose of the tools is not known, they collect a bevy of information including, but not limited to, location, user accounts, phone numbers, system logs and some SMS data.

Here's the kicker - it is apparently possible for any app that uses Android's INTERNET permission to access - and therefore copy off the device - any of that information. Given that most apps that access the web or display ads request the INTERNET permission, the consequences of this find are, as Artem Russakovskii of Android Police puts it, massive. Reportedly only phones with the stock Sense firmware are affected. Using a proof of concept app, the EVO 4G, EVO 3D, Thunderbolt, EVO Shift 4G, MyTouch 4G Slide and some Sensation models have been found vulnerable to data theft via the HtcLoggers app.

Put simply, any app with the INTERNET permission running on the aforementioned phones can access at least:

ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION Allows an application to access coarse (e.g., Cell-ID, WiFi) location
ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION Allows an application to access fine (e.g., GPS) location
ACCESS_LOCATION_EXTRA_COMMANDS Allows an application to access extra location provider commands
ACCESS_WIFI_STATE Allows applications to access information about Wi-Fi networks
BATTERY_STATS Allows an application to collect battery statistics
DUMP Allows an application to retrieve state dump information from system services.
GET_ACCOUNTS Allows access to the list of accounts in the Accounts Service
GET_PACKAGE_SIZE Allows an application to find out the space used by any package.
GET_TASKS Allows an application to get information about the currently or recently running tasks: a thumbnail representation of the tasks, what activities are running in it, etc. READ_LOGS Allows an application to read the low-level system log files.
READ_SYNC_SETTINGS Allows applications to read the sync settings
READ_SYNC_STATS Allows applications to read the sync stats

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 has Super AMOLED Plus display

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

This is a nice upgrade over the original 7-inch Galaxy Tab that I reviewed earlier this year, going well beyond the extra 0.7-inches of screen real estate. The Super AMOLED Plus-ness is great, but you'll also find a beefed up 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 3MP rear and 2MP front cameras, LTE and HSPA+ 21Mbps support, and 1080p full HD video playback. Not surprisingly, they've also moved up from Froyo on the original Tab to Honeycomb 3.2 on the Galaxy Tab 7.7.

Samsung has indicated that the microSD slot-touting Galaxy Tab 7.7 will ship in your choice of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities.

The device is powered by the TI OMAP 4430 1.2GHz processor, offers up to 64GB storage capacity, microSD support, a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, 5MP rear and 2MP front cam, and a battery life of up to eight hours. Pricing is unknown and availability is expected sometime by the end of the year.

NVIDIA 28nm mobile lineup surfaces

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageNVIDIA's upcoming 28nm mobile GPU lineup for the mobile platform surfaced, which may start hitting the market by the end of the year. The low-end parts will arrive first, while higher-end parts will follow in January and April/May.

Codenamed N13 Series, the chips are ten in number and are divided into three categories, according to the target consumer segment.

The N13E are the Enthusiast-grade models and will arrive next year, in January (N13E-GS1) and April or May (N13E-GTX), though the samples will ship earlier (early November and early 2012, respectively). They have 2 GB of GDDR5 VRAM backing them and 256-bit memory interfaces. The mainstream and low-end GPUs will arrive earlier, during this year's December in fact (2011), with the mobile parts set to appear fastest. This means that their first samples will be sent out during early October.

Their memory will be of 1 GB or 2 GB DDR3/GDDR5 and the bandwidth will be of 64 bits or 128 bits, depending on model.

All in all, the codenames are similar, in pattern, to the N12 that spawned the 500 series of adapters, though changes may still happen by the time anything is made official.

The info and specs should be taken with a grain of salt as it's nothing more then a spreadsheet filled out by someone.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 goes Android 3.2

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

The Acer Iconia Tab A500 tablet was off to a fairly promising start some months ago, and it looks like the next step forward, as far as software goes, is ready to be taken now that an Android update is being sent out as softpedia reports today.

By now, those interested in the goings on on the IT market, or at least some of them, will be more than familiar with the tablet segment.

Already there are a fair number of such products out on sale, as well as on the way to stores.

The former set is largely composed of products that are already to their first or second updates, as far as the operating system goes.

Since the coming of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, which was specially-tailored for slates, models running it have been getting optimizations, fixes and new features, though not every day of course.

The product now found to be enjoying this type of progress is a certain slate that Acer released a while ago.

Dubbed Iconia Tab A500, it did have the Android 3.0 on, but the Android 3.2 version is now about to reach owners, according to new reports, even though only Poland is, for now, seeing the process being carried out (for both products). Acer made sure that the Tab A501 also made the list of updating products.

It will bring along pixel scaling for apps, allowing programs designed for smaller devices to use the whole screen surface of the Tab 500.

The tablet should also see an overall performance improvement and synchronization of media from the SD card, when applicable.

For users that want a reminder, the Iconia Tab A500 is based on the NVIDIA Tegra 250 Cortex A9 ARM processor and was released back in April. It has 16 GB of storage, an SD card slot, a 10.1-inch screen and two webcams, plus Ethernet, WiFi, etc.

AMD 2012 Notebook APU Code Names and Positioning

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

AMD will continue to expand its portfolio of mobile Fusion products in 2012 by launching no less than five new dual-core and quad-core chip designs, covering different segments of the market and featuring TDPs ranging from 8W to 60W.

AMD has split its 2012 family of accelerated processing units into four distinct categories depending on their performance and power consumption. The most powerful of these solutions will be based on the Trinity APU and target the performance market.

These will continue from where the AMD A8-35xx chips have left off and include a high-performance graphics core based most probably on the VLIW4 architecture, introduced by AMD in its Cayman desktop GPU (Radeon HD 6900), which is going to be paired with quad processing cores.

The three Trinity chips that AMD plans to introduce will have TDPs ranging from 35W to 60W. In the mainstream and borderline performance sector, AMD will use chips based on the Weatherford and Richland designs, which are also derived from the Trinity architecture, but sport weaker graphics. These will include four and respectively two processing cores, while TDPs are rated at either 35W or 45W.

Moving into the two latter performance sectors, which target essential and under 12-inch notebooks, AMD will drop the Trinity architecture and instead go with an enhanced version of the Bobcat cores used in today's C and E-Series APUs.

These will be paired together with improved graphics cores to form the Wichita and Krishna APUs, which will have TDPs of 20W and respectively 8W. No information regarding the release date of any of these accelerated processing units has been made public, but AMD is expected to follow a similar path with that of this year's APU launches.

What this means is that Wichita and Krishna will most probably be launched during the first quarter of 2012, while the Trinity-based APUs will arrive in the second half of the year. (via Donanim Haber / via Soft-Pedia).
