Alienware M17x suffering from GPU-related power issues

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

The folks at Engadget report Alienware M17x laptop users are facing power issues. A previous DPC latency issue has just been fixed but now users are suffering from GPUs that draw more power than the laptop can provide.

As it turns out, the symptoms are similar to the stuttering caused by the DPC latency issue (hence the confusion), but the new problems are being blamed on power issues -- namely, that the GPU is drawing more power than the laptop can provide. Worse still is that it seems like those with the highest-end configuration are the most likely to experience the problem, as they're effectively maxing out an already maxed-out system. For its part, Dell has apparently fixed the issue in the most recent revision of the laptop, but users on the Notebook Review forums are reporting that the company hasn't exactly been eager to dish out replacements for everyone affected (which seems to be the only surefire "fix" available).

Windows Phone 7 gets some jailbreak TLC

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Microsoft launched their Windows Phone 7 to the market last week, and hackers have already compromised the operating system to allow unauthorized code to be run, allowing users to run applications that Microsoft would normally not approve of.
The pieces started falling into place when user 'hounsell' on xda-developers.com noticed the a third-party application in the WP7 marketplace (Network Profile by Samsung) used native code, not Silverlight-managed code as all non-Microsoft apps should.

Upon closer inspection, he documented some interesting characteristics of the application that gave it its native capabilities  most notably a DLL called Microsoft.Phone.InteropServices, which if poked the right way provided COM access.

Building upon this, Chris was able to successfully code and deploy a valid WP7 application using the developer sideloading process to a Windows Phone 7 device that inherited the ability to run unmanaged code.

Even though this breakthrough pretty much provides root access to the core of the Windows CE-based system including registry and file system necessary for future jailbroken applications, the last and major piece of the jailbreaking puzzle remains sideloading an application on a common non-developer device, since such an app would never make it through marketplace certification.

Alienware M11x Gets Core i3/i5/i7 gets NVIDIA Optimus

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Alienware M11x was said to have been designed as the gaming alternative to the netbook industry, but Dell preferred to call it an ultraportable gaming machine.

This laptop comes with a 11.1-inch chassis and packed some of the most performance-capable components for its form factor. On that note, it appears that the small gaming rig is about to get a much-welcome upgrade that is bound to further boost up performance.

Now optional are Intel's latest Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 processors. This is certainly a step up from the Intel Core 2 Duo processors that were available on the initial design. In addition, it appears that users will also be able to take advantage of that unique NVIDIA Optimus technology, which is expected to increase battery life, without compromising on battery life.

The move to the latest processors should be appreciated by fans of the Alienware brand and computer enthusiasts, which will now be able to enjoy a gaming experience on a solid portable computer that comes with a stunning 11.6-inch display. The new upgrade option doesn't include the system graphics card and other components, with the machine supporting the GeForce GT 335M, up to 8GB of RAM and an option for an HDD or an SSD. Dell's Alienware M11x is now available.
