Corsair Obsidian Series 550D and Carbide Series 300R

HTPC 228 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Corsair today announced the builder-friendly Obsidian Series® 550D ultra-quiet premium case and the compact Carbide Series 300R gaming case.

The Corsair Obsidian Series 550D: Cool and quiet
The Obsidian Series 550D offers a revolutionary combination of noise reduction and a wide array of choices for customizing cooling. The rugged steel and brushed aluminum chassis comes with two 120mm intake fans and one 120mm exhaust fan. Additional fan mounting points are provided for up to ten fans total, including locations for dual side-mounted fans for drawing air directly onto GPUs, and top fan mounts spaced for radiator compatibility. Unused hard drive cages can be removed to improve airflow, and Corsair's cable routing system allows wires and cables to be tucked behind the motherboard and out of the airflow path.

The front panel and side panels are fully lined with noise damping material, as well as the covers for the side and top intake mounts. The innovative use of noise-damped covers minimizes unused fan intakes causing increased audible system noise. Noise is further reduced through the use of silicone mounts on the fans and hard drive bays. Even the front air intakes are angled for improved noise reduction.

The 550D provides eight expansion slots with room for GPUs of up to 450mm in length, a CPU backplane cutout for easy installation and upgrade of CPU heatsinks, a fully-painted matte black interior, six tool-free hard drive bays with removable caddies with integrated 2.5" SSD support, and four tool-free optical drive bays. Other high-end features include magnetically-mounted dust filters and side panels that open with the touch of a button. The diamond-cut aluminum front control panel houses two high-speed USB 3.0 connectors and audio connectors.

The Corsair Carbide Series 300R: a compact expression of Corsair's gaming PC philosophy
Great gaming systems begin with a great case, and the Carbide Series 300R provides a remarkable number of in-demand features in an attractive, compact chassis. Builder-friendly features include three tool-free optical drive bays and four tool-free hard drive bays with integrated 2.5" SSD compatibility. There's room for high-end GPUs of up to 450mm in length, and the matte black interior incorporates Corsair's innovative cable routing system that helps keep wires and cables out of sight for a clean look and improved airflow. The 300R comes with intake and exhaust fans, with room for five additional fans including dual side-mounted fans for direct GPU cooling.

"Inexpensive, compact cases often fall short in builder-friendly features, airflow, or the cosmetic features that make great gaming PCs really stand out," continued Mr. Mookerjee. "The Carbide Series 300R hits the mark for an affordable, enthusiast-quality compact PC case. Its innovative features will be appreciated by both seasoned system builders and PC gamers who are taking the leap and building their first system from scratch."

Pricing and Availability
The Obsidian Series 550D and Carbide Series 300R are backed by a two-year warranty and are expected to be available in February from Corsair's worldwide network of authorized retailers and distributors at a US suggested retail price of $159 USD for the Obsidian Series 550D, and $89 USD for the Carbide Series 300R.

Oh that design .. no ...

Cougar reveals Solution, a new mid-tower gaming case with a rugged appearance, all-black coating, optimized ventilation, a PSU air filter and cable routing features.
COUGAR today announced global availability of their latest middle tower PC case focusing on attractive design and convenient every-day usage features at an affordable budget price point. The COUGAR Solution comes entirely black coated outside and inside, the honey-comb and mesh hybrid intake design creates a solid, rugged look with optimized ventilation characteristics.

As COUGAR is specifically targeting demanding enthusiast users and gamers, powerful high-end setups are always a major focus of attention when designing PC cases, power supplies or cooling fan solutions. Therefore, the COUGAR Solution offers a broad range of ventilation upgrade potential with up to 8 installable fans. But ventilation is more than just about fans. In order to optimize internal airflow, the COUGAR Solution has been created with a sophisticated, yet easy to use cable-routing in mind. The cable routing does not only ensure a clean inside of your system, but moreover allows your components to stay cool. In turn this also ensures a longer product life span.

But cooling and ventilation goes even further. The backside PCIe slots are all vented and two holes for water-cooling hoses are provided for as well. So if you are in the game for advanced gameplay and need to install multiple VGA setups, you are cool and safe with up to 320 mm of space for your graphics cards. And the extra large cutout on the motherboard backplate provides most convenient access for CPU cooler installation, so you can swap coolers on-the-fly.

As a power supply specialist, COUGAR understands best where and how to place your PSU. In the COUGAR Solution case, the power supply unit is placed on the bottom, so all motherboard, components and storage devices can be reached easily. This placement also ensures that your power supply is located at the coolest spot or your PC case, since cold air stays at the bottom, while hot air floats upwards. On top of things, the COUGAR Solution case provides for an air filter underneath the power supply, so your PSU fan stays clean and powerful.

Cumbersome installation of optical drives and HDDs are a matter of the past, as screwless-installation mechanisms make it child

Xigmatek Midgard II mid-tower chassis

HTPC 228 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Xigmatek debuts the Midgard II, a new mid-tower case with USB 3.0, a rubberized surface feel, a hot-swap bay, and room for up to eight fans and a 280mm radiator.

The successor of the popular Midgard Mid-Tower is getting ready to step up to the plate. Xigmatek has once again managed to fill the Midgard II with a long list of unique features for the demanding PC enthusiast. Just to name a few: USB 3.0, a rubberised surface by the name of "Leather Touch", a hot-swap bay in the top, room for up to eight fans and a 280 mm radiator - all for an unbelievably low price!

When Xigmatek presented the original Midgard in 2009 as their first chassis, it managed to capture the hearts of PC users all over the world. The reviewers praised it, the users loved it. This secret behind its continuing success is quite simple: at the time, the Midgard was at the top of its game in terms of technical aspects by offering eSATA, hard drive trays and screw-less installation methods along with the possibility to route water cooling out the back of the chassis.

On top of that, it impressed with space for a large number of fans and excellent cable management possibilities. Xigmatek was one of the pioneers behind the all black interior which has now become a standard in the industry. Even though the original Midgard offered such extensive features, it took the market by storm because of the unbeatable value. The question remains if Xigmatek is able to repeat this success with the new Midgard II. The answer is clear: YES!

On the exterior, the Midgard II utilizes the same metal mesh accents as the original Midgard, but Xigmatek goes a step further by employing a new surface material, proof that the designers have are always at the forefront of the newest developments in the case market. The top and front panels of the chassis feature this new surface by the name "Leather Touch", which resembles that of some of the best gaming mice in the world.

Behind the dust filter protected front mesh, there is space for two 120 mm fans, with one such unit being present out of the box to cool the hard drive bays. A second unit has been placed in the rear of the chassis to expel hot air out the back. Two 120 or 140 mm units may be installed in the top of the case, while the side panel also offers space for two additional fans. Lastly, there is one more spot in the floor of the Midgard II, next to the dust filter protected opening for the bottom mounted power supply. This PSU bay is lined with foam to eliminate vibrations with the help of the four rubber mounts on which the power supply rests.

The Midgard II also offers an extensive cable management system with multiple openings and clips, making a clean interior a definitive possibility, while the large hole under the mainboard tray allows for easy access to the CPU cooler backplate. In addition, the chassis also features water cooling holes and a screw-less system for the three 5.25 inch slots, while the PCI slots are secured with easy to use thumb screws.

A brand new feature is the docking station in the top panel of the chassis, allowing you to utilize the hot-swap capability of modern hard drives - including the newest ones with SATA 6Gbps. Due the dual-cover design, it can easily be equipped with 2.5 or 3.5 inch units. Op top of that the Midgard II features two current USB 3.0 along with two USB 2.0 connectors and a pair of audio connectivity. Another unique feature is the possibility to install a slimline optical drive without blocking one of the 5.25 inch bays. Xigmatek includes the appropriate tray and front cover for such a usage scenario.

The Midgard II can hold up two six 2.5 or 3.5 inch hard drives, utilizing separate hard drive trays. 3.5 inch units can be installed without the use of additional tools, thanks to the embedded metal pins in each tray, For those with extra long graphic cards up to 33 cm in length, the top cage may be removed to free up the required space.

With this long list of features, along with the Xigmatek "Mono Cool" fan controller to control up to three fans, the Midgard II manages to deliver all the attribute to become just as successful as its predecessor, while continuing to deliver an unbelievable price point.

The Xigmatek Midgard II Midi-Tower - black will be available at the end of November for a price of 69,90 Euro.
