Swiftech Apogee Drive II CPU Water-Block w/Integrated Pump

Cooling 272 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Swiftech announced the release of the Apogee Drive II, a CPU waterblock featuring an integrated pump. "Like a phoenix rising from its ashes, the Apogee Drive II returns to take its place at the helm of Swiftech's CPU waterblock product line and it includes all the latest and greatest technological advancements that we have to offer today" said Gabriel Rouchon Swiftech's Chairman and CTA.

Derived in general concept from the company's Apogee Drive initially released in 2007, the Apogee Drive II much differs from the original in terms of its execution. The original was conceived as a moderate cost unit, using plastic injection molding for its body, the entry-level MCP350 pump and it came with bare essentials. In contrast, the Apogee Drive II is conceived as a luxury vessel: its uses the PWM controlled MCP35X, Swiftech's most powerful pump to date, a precision CNC machined water-block body that lends itself to easy upgrades for future socket form factors, adjustable inlet and outlet ports, a heatsink to further cool the pump, LED illuminated logo in a choice of 3 colors, braided cables, and the company's now famous retention system. The only concession to cost and waste-cutting measure the company made was to not bundle all the retention systems into one SKU, and to make 3 separate product versions.

According to the Company's own benchmarks, the Apogee Drive II edged the current Apogee HD in thermal performance, which is no small feat considering that the HD is currently hovering at the top of the world's performance charts. Given the considerable headroom afforded by the pump, uses for this type of device span across the entire spectrum of the high-end liquid cooling arena, but will particularly please system builders with space-constrained applications. The initial SKU being released is compatible with Intel CPUs using socket LGA 775, 1155 and 1366. Two more versions are expected to be released in June: a version compatible with Intel socket LGA 2011, and one compatible with all current AMD processor sockets.

MSRP

  • 1155/1366 version: $144.95
  • 2011 version: $135.95
  • AMD version: $138.95

Cooler Master Eisberg watercooling lineup shown

Cooling 272 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Cooler Master has two new watercooling products on display at CeBIT; the Eisberg 240 and the Eisberg 120. As the product names suggest, these watercooling kits offer radiators with a size of 240mm and 120mm, respectively.

Both models offer a copper radiator that is designed to be used with two fans in push-pull configuration. Included in the kit is a waterpump from German manufacturer Eheim with ceramic bearings, it has a nominal operation speed of 1500rpm and a maximum speed of 3000rpm. The cooling fluid can be refilled and the kit uses standardized fittings so you can connect third-party components. Cooler Master says the included pump is powerful enough to simultaneously serve four CPU and four GPU cooling blocks.

The Eisberg 120 is expected to cost about 130EUR while the 240 edition should have a MSRP of around 140EUR. Availability is slated for late April, and Cooler Master added that a 360mm edition should follow afterwards.

We'll have to wait for some reviews to see how it performs, but it looks like a good kit that uses quality components and offers expandability. The photo's are courtesy of tweakers.net

Be quiet! SilentWings 2 Fan Series

Cooling 272 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Be quiet!, market leader for PC power supplies in Germany for six straight years, is introducing their innovative new fan series SilentWings 2. With advanced new features such as exchangeable mounting possibilities, be quiet! takes a simple product like the fan to the next level. And with its improved bearing technology, the new SilentWings 2 is going to follow in the steps of and even exceed its hugely successful predecessor in terms of silence.

"It's difficult to improve excellent things"
When be quiet! introduced the original SilentWings PC case fan series almost three years ago, it flew to the top of the 'recommended list' for serious users intent on achieving the ideal balance between silence, cooling performance and fan life. Its performance was so superior that several print and online magazines quickly named it their reference case fan. Of course, it's difficult to improve excellent things, so the pressure was really on the R&D team when it started to work on SilentWings 2. In the end, though, the pressure and hard work paid off, for they have achieved the goal of producing a clearly superior product.

No friction equals no sound
One key result is the noticeably lower noise level. SilentWings 2 uses the most advanced bearing technology on the market, called fluid dynamic bearing (FDB). The bearing essentially makes the fan float on a cushion of fluid, resulting in extremely low noise levels because there is virtually no friction to create sound. When coupled with the unique aerodynamic fan blade design be quiet! is famous for, SilentWings 2 is virtually inaudible.

"SilentWings 2 combines solid engineering, long life and incredible quietness with truly effective cooling. This unique combination of attributes not only makes it a worthy successor to original SilentWings but the superior quiet cooling solution on the market." is how Scott Richards, Global Brand Director at be quiet! announced the new series.

Over 30 years of lifetime
Another positive consequence of the new industrial grade FDB bearing technology is much longer lifetime. By eliminating direct contact between the fan shaft and the bearing, the fan lasts much longer than those with common bearings. A copper core inside the bearing makes it even more durable by improving heat transfer out of the bearing. Heavy duty lubricants also contribute to the terrific overall lifetime of 300,000 hours
