Qualcomm Snapdragon X Laptop Sales and Market Position Disappoint a Little

Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 14

teaser
Since its introduction, approximately 720,000 laptops equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chip have been sold. The Snapdragon X, Qualcomm’s primary processor for laptops and personal computers, has encountered initial challenges in gaining significant market traction. In the third quarter of 2024, only 720,000 devices featuring the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus models were sold, accounting for roughly 0.8% of total PC sales during that period. Despite a substantial 180% increase in sales compared to the previous quarter, the Snapdragon X maintains a minor presence in a market predominantly controlled by traditional x86 processors from established manufacturers. Microsoft has been the principal driver of Snapdragon X device sales, integrating the processor into several Surface models and thereby becoming the largest distributor of this technology. Other major manufacturers, including Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, and ASUS, have also adopted the Snapdragon X platform, although their adoption rates are significantly lower. According to data from Canalys, the latest generation of PCs utilizing ARM-based processors like the Snapdragon X remains a niche segment, holding less than 1.5% of the market share within the Windows ecosystem. This limited adoption suggests that while there is interest in ARM-based solutions, widespread acceptance and integration are still in the early stages.
