ASUS Maximus V Extreme review

Mainboards 338 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

teaser

We review the ASUS Maximus V Extreme. There is a kind of people that feel enough is not enough, they want moar' and for exactly that kind of enthusiast end user ASUS creates ROG EXTREME products. This is a ROG (Republic of Gamers) motherboard, and that means extra enthusiast features alright, as for overclockers, here's where things start to get serious, the board is designed with a 12-phase Digi+ VRM, Subzero Sense, has voltage-measurement points and the ROG Connect technology (overclock the board via Bluetooth from their phone). And yes there's still more, ASUS throws in the OC Key as well, which creates an overlay on the active DVI monitor to adjust overclock settings in real-time without using additional software or hardware (it connects to the graphics card DVI port). The ASUS Maximus V Extreme just breathes overclock potential.

Corsair GS800 PSU review

Review 567 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

We review the Corsair GS800 power supply. The power supply is on the market for a while now already and it one of the more popular models. It offers Bronze efficiency, a single 12V rail and comes with a fan that doesn't activate until you use 20% of PSU load.

That fan BTW can be lit with three led colors. The PSU itself is non-modular, not a biggy for most, but most of you with a side panel window in their chassis really want modular cables. Being 800W and with all the aforementioned features the PSU is priced in the 90 EUR range here in the Netherlands, and that's not a bad price as you are about to find out. Read the article here.

OCZ to boost SSD performance with new Barefoot 3 controller

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

OCZ stated it taped out the Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller, the chip is in production and solid state disks powered by the new chip will be out in August or September. The company announced the Barefoot 3 controller will offer significantly better performance than the current lineup, and that it will cut the company's costs.

"We have recently gave out our next generation Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller [to production] and expect to receive sample silicon back from our foundry partner TSMC in coming weeks. We expect to begin sampling SSDs on this controller in the August to September timeframe. We expect to have SSD sales related to Barefoot 3 in the third fiscal quarter," said Ryan Petersen, chief executive officer of OCZ, during a conference call with financial analysts.

The OCZ/Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller utilizes internally designed - the first time for OCZ - Aragon 400MHz 32-bit processor. The Aragon core supports an SSD specific RISC instruction set, allowing most instructions and branches to be executed in a single cycle, OCZ claims. The chip is set to be made using 65nm process technology at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. OCZ believes that the new Barefoot 3 SoC will significantly boost performance of its SSDs.

NVIDIA to ship 4G LTE chip for ASUS Windows RT tablet

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageNVIDIA will ship an Icera 4G LTE chip for an upcoming ASUS Windows RT based tablet. NVIDIA acquired Icera last year, the company's first Tegra chip with integrated LTE is expected in 2013.

Asustek Computer Inc. (ASUUY, 2357.TW) plans to release a version of its Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) Windows RT tablet that uses an Nvidia 4G Long Term Evolution chip, said Mark Aevermann, an Nvidia product manager overseeing the chip maker's notebook graphics chip business and its Windows RT push.

The tablet will use a standalone chip for cellular connectivity, as well as Nvidia's mobile application processor, Mr. Aevermann said in an interview Monday. He noted the company plans to eventually integrate its Icera cellular chips with its Tegra application processor.

Mr. Aevermann said the LTE and WiFi versions of the Asus tablet, currently dubbed the "Tablet 600," will likely be available at the same time Windows is released. It will be one of the first devices, if not the first, to use Nvidia's 4G chips from its Icera acquisition.

Sapphire releases a 6GB Radeon HD 7970 TOXIC

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Personally I fail to see why you would need 6GB of graphics memory being tied to one GPU, the regular 3GB already should be aby far sufficient enough. That didn't stop Sapphire to release a 7970 6GB TOXIC.

The card boasts 6GB of the latest GDDR5 memory, a powerful 10-phase power supply known as the Lethal Power.

By default, the HD 7970 6GB TOXIC Edition runs at 1050 MHz and with PowerTune Dynamic Boosts rises to 1100 MHz on the engine with the memory clock at 6000 MHz effective. By pressing the new SAPPHIRE exclusive Lethal Boost Button, the beast is unleashed, boosting the core clock speed to 1100 MHz with PowerTune Dynamic Boost to an industry first of 1200 MHz on the engine while the memory is further overclocked to 6400 MHz effective.

NVIDIA Forum Hack exposed

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageLooks like the guys that hacked the NVIDIA forums posted a dump of the database on pastebin. You can read that here. Not only the forums are compromized, shop.nvidia.com apparantly as well.

The group behind the hack is Apollo project:

But let's put this in perspective, this is only a forum hack. I am actually suprised nVidia decided to even disclose that they'd been hacked quite a few weeks ago.

It did take them a while though. We aren't acting extremely maliciously, we've used this database to target disgusting corporations who deserve to be brought to justice.. and we are getting there, slowly but surely.

I know one day it will all change, but for change to happen.. You have to make the change. I was always raised to believe that the only person anyone can change is themselves, but I think that's absolute bullshit, and you should to. I guess you should consider this a call to arms. We are riding as one now. I don't have any other name, I don't want one, and neither should you. I don't have all the answers, but if you take one thing from me.. Wake the fuck up and start looking at things.

Oh, and nVidia forgot to tell you that shop.nvidia.com has also been compromised. nVidia minimizing the affect that the hack will have on its stock price? SHORT SELL, SHORT SELL.

Next-gen Intel Atom delayed to end of 2013

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Intel's latest roadmaps show that the next-gen Valleyview Atom SoC and the corresponding BayTrail platform are delayed until the end of 2013, and won't see widespread availability in products until 2014.

On paper, the whole platform looks promising. We have Bay Trail-T and Valleyview-T for mobile phones (until then, you're stuck with Oak Trail-based Atom Z6xx processors) which will support LPDDR3 memory from Day 1. Valleyview-T will be available in quad-core format as well, which means that by Q4 2013 both Qualcomm and TI need to have their processors candy-dandy, given the lead from HiSilicon, NVIDIA and Samsung.

The only problem is that taking a look at competitor's roadmaps, they seem to be more than ready for continuously-delayed "Intel chips that will change the world". Ultimately, Intel plans to utilize its 22nm fabs to the full extent, with the future migration to 14nm, but the mobile platform is looking to lag one process node behind the traditional desktop/notebook/server processors. The official line is that the company still prepares 22nm mobile node, but that node slipped deep into the 2013 and as we all know, you can buy 22nm processors from Intel

Prolimatech blue version of Megahalems Rev. B

Cooling 272 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Prolimatech has introduced a blue edition of its Megahalems Rev. B CPU cooler. The cooler has the same specifications as the original model, but will likely cost a little bit more than the original's $70 price tag.

As another site mentioned it is alomost the same color as Gigabyte uses on its motherboards. Most of the cooler's 88 stainless steel fins are blue, with the top fins on each of the two stacks retaining a chrome finish. The six 6 mm-thick heat pipes passing through them are made of nickel-plated copper, while most metal parts of the retention modules are colored black.
