Acer Iconia Tab A500 goes Android 3.2

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

The Acer Iconia Tab A500 tablet was off to a fairly promising start some months ago, and it looks like the next step forward, as far as software goes, is ready to be taken now that an Android update is being sent out as softpedia reports today.

By now, those interested in the goings on on the IT market, or at least some of them, will be more than familiar with the tablet segment.

Already there are a fair number of such products out on sale, as well as on the way to stores.

The former set is largely composed of products that are already to their first or second updates, as far as the operating system goes.

Since the coming of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, which was specially-tailored for slates, models running it have been getting optimizations, fixes and new features, though not every day of course.

The product now found to be enjoying this type of progress is a certain slate that Acer released a while ago.

Dubbed Iconia Tab A500, it did have the Android 3.0 on, but the Android 3.2 version is now about to reach owners, according to new reports, even though only Poland is, for now, seeing the process being carried out (for both products). Acer made sure that the Tab A501 also made the list of updating products.

It will bring along pixel scaling for apps, allowing programs designed for smaller devices to use the whole screen surface of the Tab 500.

The tablet should also see an overall performance improvement and synchronization of media from the SD card, when applicable.

For users that want a reminder, the Iconia Tab A500 is based on the NVIDIA Tegra 250 Cortex A9 ARM processor and was released back in April. It has 16 GB of storage, an SD card slot, a 10.1-inch screen and two webcams, plus Ethernet, WiFi, etc.

Users report Intel SSD 320 firmware fix is ineffective

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Users of Intel's SSD 320 series reported the recently released firmware fix did not effectively address the 8MB bug, and in some cases made the drives even more unreliable.

After installing the firmware update users reported back to Intel Support Community claiming that the new firmware did not effectively address the 8 MB bug, and has in some cases, made the drives even more unreliable. The users note that a SSD self-test cycle by the drive is causing Windows to crash with a bluescreen (BSOD).

Intel thus far has yet to respond to these posts.  Just follow the thread

NVIDIA still leads discrete GPU market GPU sales drop

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

The latest discrete graphics card marketshare data from Jon Peddie Research indicate that NVIDIA's marketshare is up 1.1 percent year-over-year, while AMD lost 0.8 percent. However, the raw data also uncovers that the amount of discrete GPUs sold is shrinking significantly as both AMD and Intel push processors with integrated graphics.

Jon Peddie Research's report also suggests the discrete GPU market as a whole is shrinking. Discrete graphics shipments slipped from 19.01 million units in the first quarter to 16.1 million in the second, and JPR expects total revenue from discrete graphics to be 33% lower this year than the last. JPR blames increasingly speedy integrated graphics, specifically those built into AMD's and Intel's latest CPUs, for the shift.

JEDEC reveals DDR4 key specs

Memory 234 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in the development of standards for the microelectronics industry, today announced selected key attributes of its widely-anticipated DDR4 (Double Data Rate 4) standard. With publication forecasted for mid-2012, JEDEC DDR4 will represent a significant advancement in performance with reduced power usage as compared to previous generation technologies. When published, the new standard will be available for free download at www.jedec.org.

DDR4 is being developed with a range of innovative features designed to enable high speed operation and broad applicability in a variety of applications including servers, laptops, desktop PCs and consumer products. Its speed, voltage and architecture are all being defined with the goal of simplifying migration and facilitating adoption of the standard.

A DDR4 voltage roadmap has been proposed that will facilitate customer migration by holding VDDQ constant at 1.2V and allowing for a future reduction in the VDD supply voltage. Understanding that enhancements in technology will occur over time, DDR4 will help protect against technology obsolescence by keeping the I/O voltage stable.

The per-pin data rates, over time, will be 1.6 giga transfers per second to an initial maximum objective of 3.2 giga transfers per second. With DDR3 exceeding its expected peak of 1.6 GT/s, it is likely that higher performance levels will be proposed for DDR4 in the future. Other performance features planned for inclusion in the standard are a pseudo open drain interface on the DQ bus, a geardown mode for 2667 Mhz data rates and beyond, bank group architecture, internally generated VrefDQ and improved training modes.

The DDR4 architecture is an 8n prefetch with bank groups, including the use of two or four selectable bank groups. This will permit the DDR4 memory devices to have separate activation, read, write or refresh operations underway in each of the unique bank groups. This concept will improve overall memory efficiency and bandwidth, especially when small memory granularities are used.

Additional features in development include:

  • Three data width offerings: x4, x8 and x16
  • New JEDEC POD12 interface standard for DDR4 (1.2V)
  • Differential signaling for the clock and strobes
  • New termination scheme versus prior DDR versions: In DDR4, the DQ bus shifts termination to VDDQ, which should remain stable even if the VDD voltage is reduced over time.
  • Nominal and dynamic ODT: Improvements to the ODT protocol and a new Park Mode allow for a nominal termination and dynamic write termination without having to drive the ODT pin
  • Burst length of 8 and burst chop of 4
  • Data masking
  • DBI: to help reduce power consumption and improve data signal integrity, this feature informs the DRAM as to whether the true or inverted data should be stored
  • New CRC for data bus: Enabling error detection capability for data transfers

DDR3 chip prices drop again

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

DDR3 prices keep dropping and dropping and guess what? They dropped again, while NAND flash pricing remains stable.

Overall price trends for DDR3 revised down further in the spot market this week (Aug 15-19) with some brokers dumping products, according to inSpectrum. As of the noon session of August 19, spot pricing for white-branded 2Gb DDR3 fell 9% to US$0.71 and branded 2Gb DDR3 dropped by 3% to US$0.98, the research firm said.

While first-tier PC vendors recently announced plans to slash their 2012 revenue forecasts due to weak demand, some brokers decided to dump their DDR3 to the spot market, which made the overall price trend worsen, inSpectrum said.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 595 still might be in the works

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageNVIDIA may be working on a successor to the GeForce GTX 590.

It seems that a Slovenian gaming news site covering Gamescom stumbled into or heard "GTX 595". The site goes on to mention that the GTX 595 is "a dual-GPU card that is not yet out," adding that "NVIDIA provide[ed] special drivers for EA gamescom to improve a little gaming experience (and probably reduce bugs )."

As TPU already reported, according to older news previously the idea behind GTX 595 (as it's now being referred to), is to strengthen the VRM circuitry of GTX 590, to perhaps facilitate higher clock speeds, and try to create a clear performance lead over Radeon HD 6990. Nothing else is known about the GTX 595 at this point. In our opinion, Battlefield 3 launch (late October) could serve as a good launchpad for a new high-end SKU.

But do take this into with a grain of salt please.

AMD A8-3800 Llano processor review

Review 567 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

We tested the A8-3850, the A6-3650 but what seems to be in the middle of them is the A8-3800. The A8 series processors are entry level to mid-range targeted processors (well -- APUs). So we are looking at reasonably up-to okay CPU performance versus a rather kick ass integrated GPU, and all that for prices that are very interesting.

Today's tested A8 3800 APU will cost roughly 89 EUR, and you get a decent entry level CPU/GPU for that money.

Apple caught photoshopping lawsuit evidence (again)

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Apple was caught using Photoshop in two lawsuits. First the firm succeeded in temporarily banning Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 in most of the EU, but keen eyes noticed that the evidence brought forward by Apple misrepresented the Galaxy Tab 10.1 as the company had changed the dimensions of Samsung's tablet to make the device look more like an iPad.

Definitely suspicious and now the company has been caught with its hands down its pants for a second time as Apple doctored a photo of the Samsung Galaxy S in a Dutch lawsuit to make it look more like an iPhone;
In this particular case, Apple's victim was Samsung Electronics Comp, Ltd. (SEO 005930). Apple accused Samsung of "slavishly" copying the iPhone 4. It sued trying to ban Samsung's widely successful Galaxy S smart phone family from the market in the Netherlands.

But it appears, in reality, that it was Apple who was "slavishly" copying and pasting the Galaxy S into Photoshop. The Galaxy S is a bit larger than the iPhone 4 (122.4 by 64.2 mm) and looked decidedly different, so Apple had its work cut out for it in order convince a judge that the phone was "copying" the iPhone's patented look -- a key claim in its case.

So it shrunk the Galaxy S down to iPhone size -- 115.5 by 62.1 mm. It also cherry-picked an image of the iPhone 3G, a defunct model it has not produced since 2009, as that model had more rounded edges -- like the Galaxy S -- and unlike Apple's current production iPhone (the iPhone 4).

PowerColor: Next-gen AMD GPUs in Q1 2012

HTPC 228 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImagePowerColor told Turkish tech site Donanim Haber that AMD's next-gen Radeon HD 7000 GPUs are likely slated for Q1 2012:

In an interview PowerColor Sales Director Elaine Liao revealed the release date for AMD's next-gen GPUs. The first Radeon HD 7000 series cards are now expected to release in Q1 2012, according to Liao. This is contrary to previous reports suggesting a release in Q4 2011.

However, a late Q4 2011 release is still possible and should not be ruled out.

Interestingly, Liao also mentions that the next-gen GPUs will likely be fabricated at TSMC's 40nm process. This is once again completely in contrary to the well known asumption that both NVIDIA and AMD are prepared to finally move away from 40nm to 28nm and also AMD's official communication, so this might be a result of miscommunication.

The interview also goes into details of upcoming PowerColor products such as HD 6870 X2, HD 6970 X2 and HD 6870 Eyefinity as well as the future of AMD's Fusion initiative.

Renesas cuts USB 3.0 controller prices in early 2012

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

DigiTimes reports Renesas plans to make USB 3.0 controllers cheaper in early 2012. Prices for its 2-port controller chips are expected to be cut to $1.20 from about $2 currently.

Renesas Electronics reportedly plans to slash unit prices for its USB 3.0 host controller ICs to below US$1.20 in early 2012 in order to tame the competition from Taiwan-based chipset vendors including ASMedia Technology, Etron Technology and VIA Labs.

Asustek began to switch some of its USB 3.0 controller orders to ASMedia from Renesas after the March 11 Japan earthquake and is currently completely outsourcing the controller chips to ASMedia, said the sources, noting that ASRock is also a major client for ASMedia. Gigabyte Technology has added Etron to its supplier list for USB 3.0 controller chips, in addition to Renesas, said the sources.
