PhotoFast PowerDrive-LSI PCIe SSD reads data at up to 1.4GB/s

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Blimey .. Engadget reports that CompactFlash stalwart PhotoFast has unveiled its all-new PowerDrive, a new PCI Express 2.0 SSD which claims can read your mind at 1.4GBps and write it at an even faster 1.5GBps.

That's the rough equivalent of reading two full CDs' content every second! Need we say more? The PowerDrive's speed puts the stinking fast Fusion-io ioXtreme to shame, humbles PhotoFast's own 1GBps G-Monster, and matches OCZ's otherworldly Z-Drive. The supported OS list includes a nice selection of Linux flavors as well, and sizes stretch from 240GB up to 960GB.

Pricing is not yet known, but we expect unaffordable :)

Corsair H70 review

We test the Corsair H70. An all-in-one liquid cooling kit just like the H50. But now it has a much thicker radiator and two fans in a push-pull configuration.

Corsair brings an updated innovative type of cooler that combines both the efficiency of a water-cooling system with the ease installation of a common air cooler. How they do that? Well, the base of H70 water block is placed upon the processor

Intel Light Peak arrives in 2012

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Intel demonstrated 10Gbps Light Peak at the IDF in San Francisco, the company said chips for the optical interconnect will be available in 2011 and the first computers with Light Peak could hit the market in 2012.

One big question is what this means for USB 3.0, but a spokesperson of the chip giant told EE Times that Light Peak and USB 3.0 could serve complimentary roles. The Intel spokesman said Light Peak and USB 3.0 could both be used on future systems and serve complimentary roles. USB 3.0 supports rates up to 5 GigaTransfers/second and data transfers of at least 300 Mbytes/second.

A representative from Texas Instruments estimated as many as 40 million notebooks could ship with USB 3.0 next year. The company will sample before the end of the year a four-port USB 3.0 controller that requires no external flash and will sell for about four dollars in 100,000 unit quantities.

Intel is expected to deliver chip sets supporting USB 3.0 by 2012, driving the technology into mainstream systems.

POV GeForce GTX 480 Ultra Charged released

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

How far can you push a GeForce GTX 480 pefore you run into limitations ? It's a processess that the TGT team from Point of View certainly is pushing the enveloppe on. They released the Ultra Charged TFC GeForce GTX 480 based on an Arctic Cooling solution.

This card does not come with the referenc clocks of 700 MHz for the GPU, 1,401 for the shaders and 3,700 for the memory but instead runs at 763 MHz, the 480 shader cores operate at 1,526 MHz and, finally, the 1536MB of GDDR5 VRAM at 3800 MHz.

The product itself really is the reference board with updated firmware and a massive three-slot (maybe even four from the looks of it) Arctic cooler with three fans.

We checked pricing and this board will carry a 529 EUR pricetag. Check the thumbnail ...

The Shaman is aimed for extreme overclocks and at the same time quiet operation. Shaman will be released before end of September. Please see the link below for our official overview video.

I'm curious how many PCI slots you have to offer for this though ... that just does not look good.

Internet Explorer 9 Beta out for grabs

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Microsoft has released the beta for the newest version 9.0 of their ever-so-popular Internet Explorer browser. The beta has all the features that will be seen come release, but does not however have the updated version 9 UI. You can download the beta here. Version 9 has some important new things about it. For starters, there is support for HTML 5 and CSS 3, and a new JavaScript engine. IE9 also has an "Acid Test" feature that will let you test the compatibility and compliance of a website with IE9. Additionally, this new browser is programmed to use your GPU much better: IE9 uses your computer's GPU to enhance hardware scalable vector graphics (SVG), JavaScript performance, and HTML5 performance.

IE9 packs a lot of enhancements and features such as HTML5 support, hardware acceleration graphics rendering using Direct2D, hardware accelerated text rendering using DirectWrite, hardware accelerated video rendering using Media Foundation, new streamlined and simplified address and navigation bar, faster JavaScript, better CSS3 compliant support, SVG1.1 standards support, embedded ICC v2 or v4 color profiles support via Windows Color System, and more.

AMD Barts specifications leaked?

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Asian tech site ChipHell published a leaked slide with the details of AMD's upcoming Barts PRO and Barts XT GPUs. These chips will replace the Radeon HD 5700 series, the most logical name would be Radeon HD 6750 and 6770 but there's also a rumor that the Barts GPUs may be launched as the Radeon HD 6800 series, as DVHardware just reported.

The slide claims Barts is based on the Cypress dual engine architecture and features full Cypress AA and pixel render performance. The Barts XT will feature 12 SIMDs, 48 texture units, 960 shaders, 32 ROPs, and 256-bit memory bus. The chip has a 850MHz core, 1GB GDDR5 clocked at 4200MHz and a TDP of over 150W. The Barts PRO is a cut-down version with 10 SIMDs, 40 texture units, 800 shaders, 32 ROPs and 256-bit memory bus. Core frequency is expected to be 700 to 725MHz, with 1GB GDDR5 clocked at 4000MHz and a TDP of under 150W.

The Barts PRO and Barts XT will take on NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 460 768MB and GeForce GTX 460 1GB, respectively, and promise to offer better performance per Watt. The Barts GPUs are expected to be introduced in October. Check the thumbnail:
