Download: Badaboom 1.1.1 (GPU transcoder)

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Badaboom can transcode video files over the GPU. Once you transcode over the GPU instead of over the CPU, the speedup is significant. The software still is in development stages, but once released and 100% stable... it'll rock your GPU.

GeForce CUDA ready graphics cards are a requirement.

Badaboom v1.1.1 is on the loose! Why, you ask, is this version called 1.1.1? Well, to answer your question, this release does not focus on adding new features, rather it's effort is geared towards making Badaboom as robust an application as possible, fixing bugs and addressing issues that all you users have reported. In fact, we took the time to summarize exactly what makes version 1.1.1 so special, so go ahead and read the release notes If you have Badaboom 1.1 and need to upgrade or if you've never tried Badaboom and are wondering what all the fuss is about, go ahead and visit the Store page. Badaboom continues to receive great feedback about the added features of version 1.1--we appreciate the support!

Fixes:

  • SLI disabling is no longer a requirement, but rather a recommendation.
  • The 64-bit video file problem that caused certain transcoded videos to fail on a number of devices has been addressed. Error messages that were seen included

Hynix shows new 40-nm-class memory chip

Memory 234 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Hynix announced that it has developed the world's highest-density memory chip using the thinnest process technology, 40nm

The new Hynix "DDR3 DRAM (dynamic random access memory)" chip adopts a technology that allows circuits inside to be just 40 nanometres apart -- a fifth thinner than at present.

A nanometre is one-billionth of a metre. The thinner the process is, the more cutting-edge the technology is for making the chips, which are widely used in computers and other electronic devices. The new product is 50 percent more productive than existing chips as it requires less energy and costs less to produce than existing ones, Hynix said.

Mass production begins in the third quarter of this year, it said.

"Hynix has become the world's first to apply the 40-nanometre-class technology to the DDR3 DRAM chip successfully," Hynix spokesman Park Hyun said.

"The new chip development will help the company continue to lead the fast-changing memory chip market."

The memory chip industry has been hard hit by the global economic downturn, with Japan's Toshiba slashing production and key Taiwanese firms turning to the island's government for help as demand worldwide slumps.

Bulk production of the first RAM sticks to use 44nm DDR3 should start in the summer. Hynix doesn't describe the nature of finished memory, though current RAM sticks are limited to 4GB and are often expensive in part due to the high costs of including a large number of individual memory chips [via google news].

Core i7 950 & 975 definitely on the roadmap

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Last week we already showed you guys some proof of a far out overclocked (5.2 GHz) Core i7 processor with the name Core i7 975. Today Fudzilla enlightens us with the rumor that there will be a Core i7 950 as well.

The Core i7 950 would run at a steady 3.06GHz, roughly 130MHz faster than its 940 predecessor. The product would be at $562 in quantities of 1000.

The Core i7 Extreme 975 that we mentioned, will run at 3.33GHz, roughly 133MHz faster than its 965 Extreme predecessor, and will be priced again at $999 in quantities of 1000. We are not sure of the Core i7 940 & 965 will go End Of Life (EOL), we very much doubt that to be honest.

Of course you can also purchase a Core i7 920 and overclock it to the new speeds, relatively easy.

Games: New Wolfenstein Impressions

Games 1603 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

The guys over at G4 have shared their impressions on the new Wolfenstein game in development. Up to this point, all is good, really good as it seems. Though this game was demoed for Xbox360, hopefully there will be a PC version. Check the video.

You start the game with a group of resistance fighters called the Kreissau Circle, a group of German resistance fighters from the city of Eisenstadt. Everything looks pretty typical at first. You blow away Nazis with an MP-40 submachine gun and a Kar-98 rifle. Blowing up a train, supposedly holding a Nazi weapons cache, releases a massive amount of occult energy and things get weird all of a sudden. Furniture, debris and men start floating in mid air, which gives you the opportunity for the first hovering-Nazi-killing-spree in the history of gaming.

In the second (and last) level Sokal displayed, BJ fights his way through a churchyard. The mystic side of the game comes more heavily into play. You can access the powers of the Black Sun by entering The Veil. While in Veil-mode, BJ has heightened perceptions, the ability to slow down time, and even the ability to walk and shoot through certain walls. The Veil also shows you the weak points on upgraded enemies, like the first occult particle cannon-wielding Nazi supersoldier, who inconsequentially, reminded me of a extremely militant Ghostbuster with a leather fetish.

A weapons upgrade system allows you to purchase items such as extended clips and silencers. You can also pick up new sci-fi weapons, like the Nazi particle cannon, after killing enemies. "You never have to lose weapons or manage your arsenal. We didn

Windows 7 no Extras like ultimate edition

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Remember when you purchased Windows Vista Ultimate that Microsoft promised additional free downloadable content ? Ars Technica reports that the Ultimate Extras embarrassment has been quite an issue since the launch of Vista, and while Microsoft did apologize and things started to get better in 2008, the fact remains that the company wasn't delivering as promised.

Many users went as far as saying that Ultimate was useless because Ultimate Extras weren't plentiful, but of course those who bought Ultimate didn't buy them for the extras. And Microsoft is hoping those users will make the same decision for Windows 7 Ultimate, which won't be getting the feature when it's released. Here's the quote that shows Microsoft has given up (it almost slipped through our fingers after all this Windows 7 SKU news):

Our new approach to planning and building Windows doesn't have the capacity to continue to deliver features outside the regular release cycle. While our core development team is focused on building the next release, our sustained engineering team is focused on updates to existing features. As a result we don't plan to create Ultimate Extras.

Windows Ultimate won't be sold at retail, but it will be offered for sale during some promotional periods. Rumor has it that it will be $80 cheaper than Vista Ultimate, going for $320. That won't affect most users who are buying it though, as they'll probably end up getting their copy when buying a new computer from an OEM. It remains to be seen how PC makers offer it, but it will likely only be an option on their higher-end models.

NV GeForce GTX 260 redesign

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageIn other news today, one of the most popular cards for NVIDIA right now has to be the GeForce GTX 260. It recently already received the new 55nm GPU (G200b), yet as it seems another update can be expected, to reduce manufacturing costs and further drive down prices.

The new PCB design is P654 and we spot several new changes. All memory chips are now located at the GPU side of the PCB. Voltage regulators are also repositioned. News from Expreview suggests that NVIDIA has worked out yet another (newer). PCB reference design model: P897 with one thing in mind, ramp down production costs even more. According to Techpowerup the reference design graphics board based on the PCB will be given the internal name "D10U-20".

  • The number of PCB layers has been reduced from 10 to 8, perhaps to compress or remove blank, redundant or rudimentary connections
  • A 4+2 phase NVVDD power design using the ADP4100 voltage regulator IC, the FBVDDQ circuit has been reduced from 2 phases to 1, and the MOSFET package has been changed from LFPAK to DPAK grouping, to reduce costs. The ADP4100 lacks the I2C interface, which means voltage control will be much more difficult than on current PCBs of the GeForce 260,280, 285 and 295
  • The optional G200b support-brace has been removed
  • While the length of the PCB remains the same, the height has been reduced to cut costs
  • BIOS EEPROM capacity reduced from 1 Mbit (128 KB) to 512 Kb (64 KB)
  • Cheaper DVI connectors
