By Hilbert Hagedoorn, July 2, 2009 - 7:51 PM

Sapphire Radeon HD 4890 Toxic Vapor-XWe test the Sapphire Radeon HD 4890 Toxic Vapor-X edition graphics card. Armed with a nice vapor chamber heatpipe based cooler and with it's clock frequency locked at a steady 960 MHz, this little beast is ready for some serious gaming action.

And it doesn't stop there though, even the nice phat 1 GB graphics memory is clocked higher at 4200 MHz.

This is seriously one of the best Radeon HD 4890 cards we ever tested.

Check out our review right here.

ThermalTake ISGC-V320 VGA cooler
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, July 4, 2009 - 3:44 AM

ThermalTake has introduced a new dual 120mm fan VGA cooler for NVIDIA and ATI graphics cards, including the latest GeForce GTX 200 and Radeon HD 4800 models. The ThermalTake ISGC-V320 features five copper heatpipes and a large aluminum heatsink to dissipate large amounts of heat. According to the specifications, the 120mm fans deliver an airflow of 58.3CFM at a noise level of only 16dBA.

The ISGC-V320 is a true masterpiece of Thermaltake’s R&D team. Its foremost feature, as a matter of course, is its surprising silence which it inherited from the original ISGC Fan. The ISGC-V320 is equipped with two 120 mm ISGC fans. Users can adjust the fan speed from 800 to 1300RPM according to their needs. Broad compatibility of the ISGC-V320 greatly enhances its convenience factor. Supported are the last graphics cards such as the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 and ATI Radeon HD 4890. 5 heatpipes in combination with a large dissipation surface ensure best performance under high stress. With these powerful parts, ISGC-V320 can easily take loads of up to 320W.

FurMark v1.7.0 released
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, July 4, 2009 - 3:42 AM

FurMark is a small OpenGL benchmark focused on fur rendering.

The rendering algorithm is highly multipass (100 passes) and each pass (or layer) uses a GLSL (OpenGL Shading Language) vertex / pixel shader to make the hairs finer and finer. To increase the fur realism, two dynamic lights are used for self shadowing. The benchmark offers several options allowing the user to tweak the rendering: fullscreen / windowed mode, MSAA selection, window size, duration. The benchmark also includes a GPU Burner mode (stability test).

This benchmark requires an OpenGL 2.0 compliant graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 5/6/7/8 (and higher), AMD/ATI Radeon 9600 (and higher) or a S3 Graphics Chrome 400 series with the latest graphics drivers.

The startup interface allows you to tweak the benchmark features such as:

  • Benchmark mode or stability test mode (for overclockers)
  • Fullscreen or windowed for each type of run mode
  • Window size selection (standard or custom)
  • MSAA samples selection
  • Benchmarking parameters: time based or frames based
  • Contest Mode
  • New: FurMark is now able to get detailed data from GPU-Z (if GPU-Z is running). In both Stability Test mode,
GPU-Z is used to display additional information (GPU core clock, memory clock, GPU temperature and power consumption).
In Benchmarking mode, GPU-Z is used to retrieve GPU core clock, memory clock, VDDC and VDDC current. Some data (like
VDDC and VDDC current) is only available on some graphics cards (like the GeForce GTX 280).
  • New: In Benchmarking mode, you can now send your score to your Twitter account (this gadget is experimental).
  • New: the main GUI is now always available so you can fire up several tests without the need to start again the application.
  • New: main GUI (graphical user interface) settings are now saved and are re-used.
  • New: in Stability Test mode, each GPU has now its own temperature graph.
  • New: in Stability Test mode, you can enable/disable the display of information the I key.
  • New: in Stability Test mode, you can enable/disable the fur rendering with the SPACE key.
  • New: added new standard resolutions: 800×600 and 1920×1080.
  • Change: main startup GUI reorganization.
  • Change: improved OpenGL rendering context creation.
  • Change: log file renamed to FurMark_xxx.log
  • Bugfix: GPU min temperature in temperature graph is now correctly updated.
  • Bugfix: in multithreading management.

Motoart retro fighter-jet desk chair - kinda cool
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, July 3, 2009 - 6:53 PM

Heh ... I'm not sure how confortable that really is .. but it sure as heck is cool.

Reclaimed from authentic, Vietnam-era fighter jets and bombers, the ejector seats are freshly padded, newly upholstered and given aluminum bases with double-wheel casters.

The fighter jet seat, above, comes from an F-4, while there’s also a B-52 model that, as you might guess, comes from the bomber.  Ergonomically they lack a few of the accepted niceties – such as usable arm-rests – but Motoart do also offer a C-130 Navigator’s chair which is a whole lot more adjustable.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, prices for the chairs are by-application only, and given Motoart say they’re all limited-edition you’re probably looking at something in excess of a Herman-Miller Aeron.  The company also makes aeronautical desks and other furniture.

Thermaltake PW880i liquid cooling solution for the CPU
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, July 3, 2009 - 6:50 PM

Okay forgive me the phat marketing lingo, this is a copy paste from the press release:

The Thermaltake PW880i is a powerful liquid cooling solution for the core of your PC- the CPU. With a 24cm radiator equipped with two 14cm fans, Thermaltake PW880i is the ideal device for efficient heat dissipation. The solid CPU water block is made of pure copper with delicate brazing technology. Supporting most mainstream CPU sockets such as Intel LGA1366 and AMD AM3, the PW880i sports excellent cooling performance for demanding users and overclockers alike. As the tank and pump can be placed outside the chassis it offers two practical advantages: you gain more space within the case itself and maintenance is made easier and more convenient.

Jammie Thomas plans to appeal $2m RIAA ruling
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, July 3, 2009 - 6:46 PM

Jammie Thomas-Rasset plans to appeal the recent court decision ordering her to pay $1.92 million in a case involving the RIAA. The legal battle has followed several twists, with the initial filing only leading to damages totaling $222,000 before the decision was thrown out. The federal jury present for the retrial, however, tacked on another $1.7 million.

"She's not interested in settling," lawyer Joe Sibley told CNET News. "That's one of the main arguments--that the damages are disproportionate to any actual harm."

Thomas-Rasset publicly refused to pay the sizable damages, as each of the 24 copyright infringements carries a price of approximately $80,000. In a separate suit, lead lawyer Kiwi Camara is going after the RIAA for allegedly violating anti-racketeering laws by intimidating defendants into accepting settlements, rather than face legal costs of a lengthy court process.

The RIAA allegedly offered to settle the first case for $25,000, although it is unclear how much the association is seeking for the retrial. Thomas-Rasset's lawyers indicated she would be unwilling to accept the terms of any settlement that required admitting guilt or paying money.

"The defendant can, of course, exercise her legal rights," said RIAA spokesman Jonathan Lamy. "But what's increasingly clear, now more than ever, is that she is the one responsible for needlessly prolonging this case and refusing to accept any responsibility for the illegal activity that two juries decisively found her liable for."

The attorneys must first file a notice of appeal before proceeding to the next step.

Apple warns of summer overheating for iPhone 3G & 3GS owners
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, July 3, 2009 - 6:42 PM

Apple has issued a warning to iPhone customers regarding iPhone 3G and 3GS devices overheating. Sporadic reports have hit internet blogs and gadget sites this week regarding overheating issues with new iPhone 3GS models. Reports from The Telegraph suggest that dozens of users have reported overheating issues. According to some owners the device becomes so hot that it's too hot to pick up and the casing on white 3GS models has turned pink for some.
Apple hasn't officially responded to the overheating claims but earlier this week the company posted a support article warning users if the interior temperature of the device exceeds normal operating temperatures, you may experience the following as it attempts to regulate its temperature:

  • The device stops charging
  • Display dims
  • Weak cellular signal
  • Temperature warning screen appears with the message "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it" (see image below)

Apple claims leaving the device in a car on a hot day or using it in direct sunlight for long periods of time can cause the temperature warning. According to the company using battery heavy applications such as GPS and listening to music in direct sunlight will trigger the warning.

Einstein Sound Master Photon Ball iPod Dock
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, July 2, 2009 - 7:21 PM

Now that's ..  different. I’ve never seen a dock quite like the Einstein Sound Master Photon Ball iPod Dock before. The colored ball pulsates and flashes to the beat of the music.

It changes colors and offers up a neat lighting appeal providing an ample accent to your tunes. Your iPod can sit in the dock on the top of the device just like any other dock. Playback can occur through the dock or through your computer, if you’d like.

Also included is a clock with an alarm, an AM/FM radio tuner and more. It’s pretty basic when it comes to output, but the added Einstein crazy lightning ball on top is what this gadget is all about anyway. You can get the Einstein Sound Master Photon Ball iPod Dock for $34.99.
