 GeForce 6600 Preview

By: Hilbert Hagedoorn | Edited by  | Published: August 12, 2004

Unfortunately we do not have samples of the products just yet. In fact I was only able to get my hands on some whitepapers just hours before the release of this new product line. Yesterday however some results leaked from a Chinese website.

These are the 3DMark03 results from a GeForce 6600 GT, 8038 marks on a 230 USD (suggested retail price) product. The results originated from the website gzeasy.com

If these results are 100% correct then the performance of this product is just downright fantastic.

The Verdict
As always NVIDIA has a product in every section of the market don't they? It's a bit of a shame we will not see the AGP version of this product quite so soon...

Set that fact aside, the series 6600 are looking really good for sure. The 128-bit memory is going to hurt the card when using hefty AA/AF choices though and gaming in the highest resolutions will show the same behaviour. I predict it'll have a rough time in there. But when we look at resolutions up to 1280x1024 combined with hefty shaders, well then the GPU is way more important and the GPU has extraordinary power as we have seen from the 6800 series. So the question is does a mid-end product buyer intend to play his or her games at the highest reolution available? Personaly I don't think so. This might be the perfect product for that particular buyer.

Also with a clockspeed of 500 MHz the GT version gives a lot of fillrate, the standard 6600 will be a wee bit of an underdog I'm afraid. Both cards should be able to deliver excellent performance at a very reasonable and most of all competitive price. Considering the mid-end segment of the market is a big one, I predict that the 6600 series is going to be rather popular, with the GT being an absolute must for the most of you.

We hope to bring you some actual tests results from the lab here quite soon. When it arrives, you'll be the first to know.

To be updated ;)
